The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this Saturday abolished all 30 ministerial groups in order to bring in more accountability and transparency into the decision process and also to allow quicker decision-making among his Modi-cabinet who are heading the several ministries and departments.

There were 21 Groups of Ministers (GOMs) and 9 Empowered Groups of Ministers (EGOMs) which had been set up by the previous UPA government to take decision on matters like corruption, inter-state water disputes, administrative reforms as well as gas and telecom pricing, before being brought to the Cabinet. An official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said that the abolishment of this system would expedite the decision-making process, and “usher in greater accountability in the system”. The PMO statement further said that the ministries and the departments would now take over the decisions pending by the GOMs and the EGOMs.

This decision from the Prime Minister comes just two days after Mr. Modi had given his Cabinet the the top ten priorities at the second cabinet meeting while asking each of his minister’s draw up a list of issues that they would be taking up in their first 100 days in the office. He also asked them to put particular focus on the efficiency, systems of delivery as well as the implementation. Rumor has it the the new Prime Minister has asked his Cabinet to put particular focus on the material of their work. It’s hard to believe that the new Prime Minister still has one day to complete his first week.
