The Rajya Sabha proceedings were stopped yet again this Thursday as members of the opposition demanded a debate over the Israel attack on Gaza Strip in Palestine. On Wednesday, the government had blocked the debate from taking place over the rules that did not give permission for “discourteous reference” towards “friendly nations”.

The chairman had agreed to the debate but the government wanted to do it another day. The External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj wrote to the chairman, urging him not to allow the debate. The delay imposed by the government caused uproar by the opposition who refused to discuss any other matter before the debate on the Gaza Strip. ”The business advisory committee will meet at 4 p.m. We can decide when the debate has to be taken up,” said Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prakash Javadekar. On one hand the government wanted to discuss the railway budget whereas the opposition members insisted that the debate should be taken up promptly. They asked the Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien to give a ruling immediately. ”Either the debate shall be taken up immediately, or we can take it under rule 267, which suspends all other rules,” said the Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal.

“Peace in West Asia is in the interest of India,” said the Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad. The opposition continued its uproar on demanding that the debate should be taken up immediately and thus all talks and business in Rajya Sabha was halted. The upper house was again adjourned, losing its question hour, as the chair adjourned it till 2 p.m. Even after reassembling of the house, both sides still forced their opinions and no business could be carried forward.
