The curfew that has been looming over the city of Saharanpur has been lifted by the police for a few hours in certain areas of the Uttar Pradesh city. The curfew has been lifted for four hours so that the police can stock up on some essential items.

This curfew has been imposed by the police since Saturday after clashes between two groups over a piece of disputed land near the city’s railway station. The Saharanpur riots had led to the arrest of thirty eight people and caused the death of three. According to the Saharanpur MP Raghav Lakhanpal (BJP), who was part of the peace committee meeting that took place yesterday, said that the riots were pre-planned. He further added that the riots were planned in a manner that they would create polarization between different religious communities before the coming by-elections in the area. “Mr. Masood of the Congress and Moharram Ali Pappu were the ones who collected the crowd and instigated it,” Mr. Lakhanpal alleged.

The District Magistrate (DM) of Saharanpur, Sandhya Tiwari said “The curfew has been relaxed for a few hours in the city. People have started to come out to purchase daily need items. There is nothing to be afraid of as of now.” “Common people are the worst targets of curfew. We could not buy necessary items and medicines. Even now only few parts have been opened which are of no big help. The area where we have major shops is closed,” said Pushpender Singh, a mechanical worker.
