This early Wednesday morning, the Andaman Sea experienced a deep depression which soon changed into a cyclone. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that a depression would move west-north-westward and expected to intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. This, it said, would then turn into a cyclonic storm.

“By Wednesday, we will get a better picture on where it will make a landfall, at what time etc,” said the India Meteorological Department cyclone warning division chief Mrutunjay Mohapatra. The cyclone is expected to move towards the northern Andhra Pradesh and the Odisha coast where a landfall is expected to take place by Sunday. The movement of the cyclone could also mean the starting of the North East Monsoon, even though the South West Monsoon have caused their share of floods in the country. Parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been experiencing continuous rains since yesterday. The schools in these areas have been shut whereas the inter-island ferry service has been stopped.

The Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has said that the state government is fully prepared to deal with the potential after effects of the expected cyclone in coastal areas of the state. The state government has cancelled leaves of its employees and put 16 coastal districts on alert besides asking Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and fire service personnel to be ready. According to DNA India, it also asked district authorities to open round-the-clock control room to co-ordinate with different departments. The districts which have been alerted include Balasore, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Malkangiri and Koraput.
