Now the people of India will have better services from the Supreme Court in matters related to social justice as the Supreme Court will now have a social justice bench which will exclusively hear such matters once a week. The bench will start functioning from the 12th of December.

Chief Justice H.L. Dattu constituted the special bench which is going to comprise of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit who will sit once a week every Friday. The bench will not only attend pending matters but will also address with fresh matters. Chief Justice Dattu made this special bench so that that matters of social justice get a specialized approach for quick results and so that people “realise the fruits of the rights provided to them by the constitutional text”. “This is an idea that should have been long implemented. The job of judiciary is not just to deliver justice but also to make people respect and fear the law. Right now, people think they can do anything and get away with it,” Livemint news portal quoted Ranjana Kumari of the Centre for Social Research, a non-governmental organization. “I know of two dowry cases which are pending in the Supreme Court for 22 years. If this body is formed, hopefully justice wouldn’t be delayed anymore,” she added.

The bench will deal with cases highlighting social issues such as the issue of release of surplus food for people living in drought-affected areas, taking steps to prevent untimely death of women and children for want of nutritious food, public distribution system, hygienic mid-day meal and night shelters according to New Indian Express. Issues like hygienic drinking water, medical facilities and women forced into prostitution will also be dealt by this bench.
