The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has been named ‘Asian of the Year’ this Friday by the Singapore publishers, The Straits Times, for focusing highly on India’s development and making the world ‘excited’ again about the prospects of India.

The leading press club, Singapore Press Holdings Limited, the publisher of The Straits Times, said “despite being relatively new to the job, he has already made a mark on Asia, reaching out to neighbours and receiving national leaders including Xi Jinping of China and Tony Abbott of Australia.” Apart from that the editor had more words of praise for the Prime Minister. “Mr Modi has got India and the world excited about hiscountry’s prospects again,” Warren Fernandez, editor of the daily said in a statement. “He has given his people a renewed sense of direction and purpose, and there are hopeful signs that he is minded to using his strong mandate to good effect in one of Asia’s major powers. We wish him and India every success.”

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said, “I congratulate Prime Minister Modi on this award. It reflects high expectation all round, not just from within India, on his stirring leadership to bring decisive reforms to his country. In my interactions with PM Modi over the years, I have been impressed with his pragmatism, bold ideas and determination to get things done. PM Modi is also keen to impart dynamism to the strategic partnership between Singapore and India. We welcome and join him in this endeavour.”
