This Tuesday saw the beginning of voting in 16 constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir which highlights the third phase of the five phased electoral process of the state elections. According to Hindu news portal Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and three of his cabinet colleagues are among 144 candidates whose fate will be decided on Tuesday in the third phase of polling in 16 seats spread across Budgam, Pulwama and Baramulla districts.

Facing cold weather, voters lined up at the polling stations before 8 am to record their vote for Kashmir. The security has been increased in all three districts of the area after the Friday violence that lead to the death of 21 people including 11 security officials and eight militants. Uri and Tral constituencies also faced militant violence ahead of polls in the area. According to Hindu an overall 70 per cent of turnout has been recorded which shows that the voters are ignoring boycott calls from separatists and militant groups.

The online portal also informs that Mr. Abdullah, who chose to contest from Beerwah in Budgam instead of his family bastion of Ganderbal, hopes that some of the recent steps taken by his government for the area will help him sail through the electoral tide from a constituency which was won by PDP candidates in the last two elections.
