dozens missing, 2 dead after mumbai-goa highway bridge collapseA busy bridge on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway, built during the British-era, collapsed in the early hours on Wednesday due to excessive rains in the Konkan region in Maharashtra. A rescue mission was initiated immediately but so far only two dead bodies have been recovered from the overflowing Savitri River, whereas a massive search continues to find other missing personals.

Raigad Collector, Sheetal Ugale, confirmed that at least 44 people, two buses and several other vehicles have gone missing from the collapsed bridge near Mahad city. Records show that two state transport buses with 11 passengers each are also missing since there is no contact with either their drivers or the passengers. The search and rescue mission has been expanded to include 80 rescuers and divers. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) claims that this will further increase to almost 200 personnel in a few hours. Anupam Shrivastava of the disaster management body mentioned that “each team consist of 40 people and there are four teams.  We will start from the bridge and move 10 meters by clearing the area with the help of divers.”

Whereas Ugale also explained that a massive search operation have been initiated while elucidating that “the bridge was built during the British era. After discussion with the National Highways Authority, we have shifted traffic to the new parallel bridge nearby. We are trying to confirm reports of other missing vehicles.”
