A Honduran lawyer in San Francisco reminded his countrymen this week that migrating to the United States for economic reasons does not qualify one for asylum.

During an interview, the Honduran lawyer Jose Tercero Midence said, "Allowing a person to obtain asylum for economic matters, does not exist in the United States." Mr. Midecen added that in order to attain asylum Hondurans must first meet a number of requirements that must be verified by the U.S. authorities. He reiterated that asylum status cannot be granted based on economic reasons.

This is a reminder that many politicians and immigration advocates in the United States also could use. In order to qualify for asylum, one must demonstrate that they have "suffered prosecution or fear that they will suffer persecution due to: race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion." In other words, migration in search of better economic opportunities or even to flee from high levels of violence does not meet the standards set for asylum. And the same standards hold for those outside of the United States applying for refugee status.
