Green opposition couple in ‘good spirits’
Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi and wife Zahra Rahnavard have been allowed to meet with their family.
According to Kaleme, a site affiliated with Mousavi, the Green Movement leader and his wife were allowed visitation with their daughters in the first days of the Iranian New Year. The meeting is said to have lasted three and a half hours.
Mousavi and fellow opposition figure Mahdi Karroubi were placed under house arrest in February 2011 after calling for protests in solidarity with protests in the Arab World.
Right groups say their continued detention is a violation of international conventions as well as Iran’s own constitution.
Mousavi and Rahnavard are reportedly in “good spirits.”
The last time the opposition couple were allowed to see their loved ones was on 4 March, two days after Iran’s held its ninth parliamentary elections.
Last Tuesday, Iranians around the world celebrated Nowruz (meaning “New Day”) which marks the start of spring.
Last week Karroubi’s son Mohammad Hosein Karroubi announced that on the first day of spring his father was allowed a twelve-hour visitation with his family, the first meeting in almost four months.
“Along with my mother, brothers and [the rest of] the family, we went to the house where my father is under house arrest. This reunion lasted for about twelve hours … it was the first visit that took place without the physical presence of intelligence agents,” he said in a Facebook post.
According to Karroubi’s son, his father congratulated the Iranian people on the New Year and added, “I am in good spirits. Having said that, solitude has its own difficulties. However, as I believe in what I do and the path I’ve chosen … I do not feel fatigue or despair, and have never been this grateful to God. I have full hope that this path will bear results.”
