A harsh-worded press release issued by the PM Office on Saturday revealed that Pakistan’s Information Minister, Pervaiz Rashid , has been asked to resign from his position as the government initiates an investigation committee to probe the planted story that contained ‘false and fabricated’ information regarding the high-level security meetings. According to the statement issued by the PMO, “evidence available so far points to a lapse on part of information minister, who has been directed to step down from office to enable holding of an independent and detailed inquiry.”

The story being dubbed as national security breach was published in Dawn on Oct 6 and contained information regarding the NSC and NAP meetings. It triggered a bitter response from the military as Corps Commanders meeting labeled it a serious matter just a few days after the story and demanded the government not only to pinpoint the culprits but also award them exemplary punishment. Meanwhile, the PM Office added in its statement that an inquiry committee has been set up comprising of senior officers of the Inter-Services Intelligence, Military Intelligence and Intelligence Bureau and it will “clearly apportion blame, identify interests and motives and expose all those responsible for this episode for stern action in national interest”.

Meanwhile, PM’s spokesman Musadaq Malik has confirmed that Premier Nawaz Sharif has sought resignation from the information minister in the light of the preliminary investigations conducted by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ahmed. However, it was stressed that Senator Pervaiz Rashid was not to be held responsible for the leakage of the information unless proven guilty by the investigation body.
