Pakistan People’s Party leader Asif Ali Zardari has selected an experienced politician Makhdoom Shahabuddin as the substitute for ousted Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday. Shahabuddin was born on April 7, 1947 in Rahim Yar Khan district of Punjab and he held the health and textiles portfolios in the current PPP-led government formed after the 2008 election. It was reported that, “President Zardari, who is also the co-chairman of Pakistan People’s Party, has nominated Makhdoom Shahabuddin as a candidate for the prime minister.”

Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said, Shahabuddin, 65, who was considered a Pakistan People’s Party supporter, would be filing nomination papers in parliament for the election of the premier by the National Assembly on Thursday.

Supreme Court dismissed Yousuf Raza Gilani today for not initiating a corruption case against the head of the PPP and President Asif Ali Zardari. The prime minister who would be replacing Gilani would also face the same hearing from the Supreme Court to investigate Zardari. The Gilani government has been widely criticized for worsening the enormous economic and security challenges in the country.

Raja Pervez Ashraf the Senior PPP leader would be the alternative candidate of the party who has served as the Power Minister, in case the nomination papers of Shahabuddin are rejected for some reason. However, Shahabuddin was unlikely to face any problems in the election. He belonged to a political family and has been elected to the National Assembly several times. When Benazir Bhutto was the Prime Minister, he had also served as the Finance Minister in the PPP government during 1993-96.
