Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, administered the oath to new Chief Election Commissioner at a ceremony held in the Supreme Court building. The newly sworn in CEC Fakhruddin G Ebrahim on Monday restated to hold the forthcoming general elections in a free, fair, impartial and transparent manner.
On the subject of holding of free and fair elections in the country, he said, "It is a challenge. Either we take it as a mission or forget it. But, this success is imperative for the whole nation. It is my last wish. We need to do it and it will be done." He commented during a brief talk with media after taking oath of the office of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). "It is my last mission. May Allah succeed me in my mission."
He also said all the arrangements were at hand and ECP was ready for general elections. But, the choice to hold the elections has to come from the government. "ECP is prepared for polls as stated by my predecessor. But, under the constitution, the decision has to be made by the PM and the government."
He said that his statement about the early elections was his personal view. "Now I am a public property. Whenever I am given a task, I have performed well. I have a good team at Election Commission and things will be better."
