Former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has been declared ineligible to contest the upcoming general election from Gujjar Khan. Returning Officer of Gujjar Khan examined the matter after a relative of Raja Jawaid Ikhlas, Ashraf’s opponent in the constituency, filed a complaint alleging that Ashraf had misused discretionary funds.
“Former PM and PPP candidate appointed his two son-in-laws on high posts which are the glaring examples of nepotism, favoritism and naked corruption,” the RO told the tribunal.
Ashraf appealed the judiciary to review the matter after the concerned Returning Officer rejected his nomination papers. An election tribunal investigated the matter and decided to withhold the ROs decision of declaring Ashraf ineligible for contesting the May 11 election.
Ashraf is also allegedly involved in corruption in clearing power projects and development schemes in his home Gujjar Khan, where he had won the last two elections. The decision has come as a shock for Pakistan People’s Party which is determined to find ways that will enable Ashraf to partake in the coming election.
Ashraf’s lawyer, former Law Minister Farooq Naek, said the PPP will appeal against the tribunal’s decision.
“Terming Raja Pervaiz Ashraf not sagacious and righteous were mere observations of the honorable judge of IHC,” Naek said.
