The Government of Punjab welcomes the Holy month of Ramadan by sharing the burden of price-hikes with their Muslim brothers by providing them relief at purposely established 350 Ramadan bazaars (markets) throughout the province.

Minister for Excise, Taxation and Finance Punjab Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman made the announcement on Wednesday while chairing a meeting to review relief procedures for public. The meeting was held at Shalimar Town Office and attended by officials of town administration, elected representatives and traders.

“All edible items have been provided in the market under Ramadan Package and Rs 100 subsidy is being given by the government on every 20 kg atta bag (flour) in Ramadan bazaars, whereas a subsidy of Rs 60 is being given at every 20 kg bag in open market,” Mr Mujtaba announced.

Mr Mujtaba claimed that the provincial government has taken all the necessary measures to ensure the availability of edibles at official rates during Ramadan. The Ramadan bazaars will be austerely monitored by elected representatives and administration officials. Complaints will be tackled immediately and strict action will be taken against those who try to violate law and exploit customers by charging manipulating prices.

The Punjab government has allocated PKR 4billion to set up Ramadan bazaars all over the province. Products sold in these bazaars will be cheaper than their market rate. The government has also provided a subsidy of PKR 2billion to utility stores by the federal government. The Utility Stores Corporation has also committed to establish its stalls at all the Ramadan bazaars arranged by the Punjab government.
