The alleged key suspect in a fatal attack on Justice Maqbool Baqar of Sindh High Court was allegedly arrested on Wednesday. On June 26, Justice Baqar along with eight others was brutally killed in an explosion on a busy Burnes Road in Sindh.

“On a tip-off police detained a suspect on whose lead a raid was conducted in Surjani Town late Tuesday night in which a key suspect of the attack on the judge was detained in injured condition after a serious encounter,” said DIG-South Dr Ameer Sheikh.

Mr Sheikh confirmed that a policeman received serious bullet wounds during the half an hour encounter. Police has identified the key suspect as Bashir Leghari who allegedly belongs to an outlawed group. Leghari is also named in the planning and execution of a number of other sectarian attacks in Pakistan. Police seized a Kalashnikov, a 9mm pistol and explosive material at the scene.

On the other hand, Leghari’s relatives are criticizing the police for illegal use of power. The suspect’s son, Muhammad Leghari, told the press that around 20 police mobiles surrounded his house at 3.45am, policemen fired a bullet in his father’s abdomen and to further frame him, shot and wounded their fellow policeman. He claims that it was a fake encounter.

“In order to hide their own failure, the police have termed him the mastermind of the attack on Justice Maqbool Baqar. Hafiz Leghari has nothing to do with the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi or any other militant group as he also remained in touch with the local administration with religious scholars of all parties,” said Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) spokesman Maulana Akbar Saeed Farooqi.
