The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) this Wednesday crumbled all hopes of continued peace in Pakistan by announcing an end to the two month ceasefire. The outlawed Talibans had announced an extension to the ceasefire last month as a goodwill gesture.

“The agreed truce had expired on April 10. We held fire for six more days from April 11 to 16, but we cannot stick to it any longer. We cannot extend the ceasefire anymore”, the TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said. He added that though the Taliban were sincere, the government was not and still arresting Talibans. TTP had announced a ceasefire at the start of March as the government sought a negotiated end to their bloody seven-year insurgency. This announcement comes a day ahead of the top-level meeting on the national security which is to be chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Shahid further added that this announcement will not affect the peace talks and that the Taliban are still keen to resolve matters with the government. “Though our central shura (council) has unanimously agreed not to extend the ceasefire, however, we want to continue with the peace talks in the earnest”, the spokesman said. He also stressed that the Taliban were critical of government’s tight-lip policy over TTP’s demands. “There’s grave like silence in the power corridors and we are concerned about it”, said he. “The “real axis of power” wants to impose its decision on the talks”, Shahidullah Shahid added hinting that the army was trying to sabotage the talks.
