The Taliban fighters this Saturday attacked several Pakistani military posts along the Afghan border in Bajaur Agency with an hours-long gun battle that included Pakistan launching airstrikes into Afghanistan.  One Pakistani soldier lost his life whereas two were injured during the encounter informed the local governments officer Shah Naseem. According to the Pakistan Military, 16 terrorists have been killed whereas the Afghan officials claimed that the airstrikes have also killed five civilians on their side of the border.

Naseem added that the heavily armed attackers also targeted several military posts in the border village of Nao Top, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Khar, the main town in Bajaur. The army was forced to respond by sending helicopter gunships into battle as troops chased the attackers. The assault killed 16 insurgents, army officials informed. The attackers then fled toward Afghanistan, they added. This fight has come a day after the the Shura Mujahideen Waziristan group, led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, in North Waziristan asked the local residents of that area to move to safer locations, closer to the Pak-Afghan border to avoid being caught in the fight between the militants and the army.

Pakistan’s concerns about miscreants and terrorists attacking from the other side of the border have been repeatedly shared with Afghan authorities, said the Pakistani foreign office spokesperson. “We hope effective steps would be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents. For its part, Pakistan will continue to exercise restraint and make efforts to maintain conducive environment for constructive engagement. We remain committed to maintaining a tranquil border especially in the run-up to second round of Afghan elections,” he said.
