The Sunni cleric, Maulana Masood Baig who was also a lecturer was killed this Wednesday morning by unknown assailants in North Nazimabad’s Hyderi area. He was also the son-in-law of renowned cleric and head of Jamia Binoria Mufti Naeem. Masood was shot while heading home from Karachi University by unknown people riding a bike. Masood died on the spot whereas the assailants fled the scene of crime. All the shops as well as businesses in the Haideri area have been suspended and the traffic is jammed.

This Saturday, the elder son of a former senator Allama Abbas Kumaili, also a cleric, was killed whereas his two guards were wounded in a targeted attack in Azizabad. Allama Ali Akbar Kumaili, 40, was shot dead in what was found to be a sectarian attack by the investigators. Kumaili was the father of four kids and was famous for his oratory skills and also for his style of addressing Majalis-i-Aza. Imran Khan, the chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had highly condemned the killing by religion extremists.

The Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen had demanded this Sunday that an army operation should be launched in Karachi immediately on the pattern of North Waziristan, as the killing of Allama Ali Akbar Kumaili had “exposed the hollow claims” of success of the ongoing targeted operation according to Dawn News.
