This Thursday, a day before the Supreme Court’s deadline, the parliamentary committee finally appointed the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). All the parties agreed on the name of Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan as the new Chief Election Commissioner.

Senator Rafiq Rajwana belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) was heading the committee and thus was chosen to make the announcement at a press conference in Islamabad. During today’s meeting of the parliamentary committee, Awami National Party (ANP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) agreed on the name of Justice Sardar Raza, according to Dawn News. PPP’s Islamuddin Shaikh proposed the name of Justice Raza for the post whereas Senator Haji Adeel of the ANP supported the recommendation. MQM’s Farooq Sattar also agreed with the name along with committee members belonging to the PML-N, which led to the selection of Justce Sardar Raza as the new CEC. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader avoided the meeting but did not make any objection about the selection.

The apex court had declared the 5th of December as the deadline for the government to fill the key constitutional office which was vacant for the last 16 months. The apex court had warned the government of action against the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition, if they failed to fill the post by the deadline.
