pbs tells sc that census can be held on armymen’s availabilityThe Additional Attorney General, Muhammad Waqar Rana, has submitted a concise statement to the Supreme Court of Pakistan on behalf of the federal government, stating that a census across the country will be held upon the availability of the army men. According to the statement submitted on Thursday, the Statistics Division/Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has already reached out to the defense authorities for the availability of army personnel.

The proceedings took place today during the hearing of a suo moto case on the delay in census, presided by a two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed. The report submitted to the court mentioned that “as soon as the availability of army personnel is ensured, PBS will conduct the census in the country as per schedule approved by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) for holding the census in 2016.” Furthermore, the PBS revealed that approximately 1,67,000 military personnel would be required for the deployment at man to man level apart from command structure and security arrangements. The report added that the defense authorities have replied that availability of armed forces for census operation would only be made possible once the security situation in the country improves.

Earlier, the PBS had told the CCI on March 25 that in the prevailing situation, wherein armed forces personnel are not currently available, and a fresh timeline schedule for holding census cannot be proposed presently.
