suicide attack foiled in shikarpur, three policemen injuredShikarpur Police foiled a suicide bombing attempt in southern part of the country at the early hours on the first day of Eidul Azha on Tuesday. The failed suicide attempt was made outside a mosque in Shikarpur in Sindh province, around 470 kilometres (300 miles) north of Karachi, and resulted in injuries to three policemen who tackled the attackers.

According to police officials, two suicide bombers tried to enter the Khanpur Imambargah but were intercepted by police. A senior police officer, Umar Tufail, explained that “three of our men are injured of whom one is critical,” adding that doctors are also trying to save the life of the other suspected bomber. Chief of police for Sindh province, A.D. Khawaja, mentioned in his remarks that “the attackers came as the worshippers were gathering to offer Eid prayers. Police were able to stop him at the gate outside the mosque.” After the attempt of first suicide bomber failed, worshippers quickly overpowered the second would-be suicide bomber as the police officers caught up with the first bomber.

Earlier in a similar suicide attack last year, more than 61 worshippers were killed in another Shikarpur mosque. The attack took place in January last year and was later claimed by extremist outfit named Lashkare-e-Jhangvi. The attack triggered nationwide protests as locals gathered to protest the second attack in the mosque in past one and a half years.
