For DJ Kayper, the future of music, her music, is as diverse as her fan base. Tired of being categorized as “a hip-hop DJ” or “a female DJ,” her new mixtape, Futurebox, explores the evolution of her sound.

“When I grew up, I listened to all kinds of music, and it’s gotten to the point where people forget that I’ve always played other types of music,” she says. “People put you into categories, which creates boundaries. Rather than having people put me in a box, I made my own, Futurebox.”

The 60-minute mixtape features a mix of electro, UK funky, dubstep and house music, and showcases the turntablist’s looping, rather than scratching, skills. “The music I’ve been working on and making is going in the direction of this music,” she says. “In a U.K. club you can go through four different genres in one night, which is not something you could do before.” This ideology is illustrated with the mixtape’s cover star, Honda’s humanoid robot, ASIMO, which has been evolving for 25 years, is able to do a variety of tasks, and is a source of fascination for the DJ. Kayper’s next task is her new album, Live from the Attic, set to release early next year. The project, inspired by hours digging through old records in friends’ attics, is a musical journey through the genres and the eras, and features samples of Kayper’s favorite tracks, ranging from old school Bollywood to 70s soul.

New Yorkers can also catch DJ Kayper spinning alongside her idol, DJ Jazzy Jeff, who’s deemed her “the best female DJ I have ever seen in my life,” at New York City’s M2 Ultra Lounge September 17th.

DJ Kayper’s broken barriers, being the first female to win the Vestax Juice DJ Competition and receiving nominations for the Best Club DJ at the 2008 and 2009 UK Asian Music Awards. She’s toured the globe, playing gigs everywhere from Greece, Switzerland, South Korea and India to New York, Atlanta, Toronto and, recently, the SXSW Music Festival in Austin.
