Harvinder Pal Dhaliwal, Tehal Shergill and Satwant Deol charged with assault at Sri Guru Nanak Sikh Gurudwara in Brampton

Officers from the 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau are investigating the circumstances surrounding a disturbance that took place at the Sri Guru Nanak Sikh Temple located at 99 Glidden Road.

On Sunday, April 18, 2010, at approximately 2:21 p.m., officers attended the temple, in order to keep the peace during an ongoing internal dispute.

Several hundred people were in attendance at the temple. Shortly before 3:30 p.m., a physical altercation took place between several parties, in which weapons were used. As a result of police being at the scene, the incident was dealt with immediately. Four male victims, ranging in age from 33 to 46 years of age, were transported to hospital with various non life-threatening injuries. All victims were treated and subsequently released.

Investigators have charged the following persons in relation to the incident:

Harvinder Pal DHALIWAL, 41 years of age, from Brampton, has been charged with Assault. He was released on a Promise to Appear and scheduled to attend court on May 20, 2010.

Tehal SHERGILL, 60 years of age, from Brampton, has been charged with Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, two counts of Assault Causing Bodily Harm, and Assault with a Weapon. He was held pending a bail hearing, scheduled for April 19, 2010.

Satwant DEOL, 25 years of age, from Brampton, has been charged with Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose and Assault with a Weapon. He was held pending a bail hearing, scheduled for April 19, 2010.

The investigation is ongoing and officers would like to speak to anyone who was present during the incident, or who has any knowledge of the events. Additional charges may be pending.

Peel Regional Police is committed to community safety. Officers from the Diversity Relations Unit are actively involved in addressing the ongoing issues at the temple, working with our community partners to ensure that future disputes are settled in a peaceful manner.

  1. Can we get together to stop this type of behavior happening especially in scomment_IDe the Gurudwara Sahib Halls. If any one have any difference in thinking, Why it is happening. I believe we should get out of whole mesh without these babas and katha wachak and start reading listening and understanding and then applying Sikh way life principles in our day to day life.

  2. I think it’s important to understand the context in which these situations are occurring. There’s two scomment_IDes to each story and it’s sad that the history of those who are accusing the charged men isn’t being conscomment_IDered. But I do agree, these situations should not occur. Those initiating and pressing for violence need to step back and think of what they are doing before acting and pointing fingers at others.
