The world’s oldest marathon runner, Fauja Singh was felicitated with CIBC Midweek South Asian Sher-E-Punjab award at a press conference held at Radisson Hotel on Friday, October 12, 2012. Y Media presented the award to Singh to laud his spectacular and unparalleled achievements.

Member of Parliament for Brampton-Springdale, Parm Gill; Brampton City Councillor Vicky Dhillon; Preet Jaswal (Midweek); Balraj Dhaliwal and Vikram Singh (Daas Optical) were also present at the event.

Fauja Singh, became the first 100-year-old to run a marathon at the Toronto’s waterfront marathon last year. Also known as “Turbaned Tornado,” Singh also holds UK records for the 200 metres, 400m, 800m, one mile and 3000m for his age group. Singh has also carried the Olympic torch during his illustrious running career.

Speaking at the event, Yudhvir Jaswal, chief editor of Midweek, said that it is important to recognize extra-ordinary South Asians like Fauja Singh who make a difference in the community as they not only represent the talent of today, but are also an inspiration for the achievers of tomorrow.

Yudhvir Jaswal also announced CIBC, leading Canadian-based global financial institution as the title sponsor of fifth annual CIBC Midweek South Asian Awards to be held on November 3 at the Radisson Plaza, Mississauga. The partnership between CIBC and Midweek will be officially announced at a press conference on October 25th.

Established in 2007, Midweek Southasian Awards recognize and honour the achievements of South Asians worldwide. This year, the 5th Annual CIBC Midweek South Asian Awards will be held on November 3 at the Radisson Plaza, Mississauga.

CIBC Midweek South Asian Awards will be awarded in the following categories:

  • South Asian Person of the Year
  • South Asian Philanthropist of the Year
  • Sher-E-Punjab Award of the Year
  • South Asian Business Man of the Year
  • South Asian Professional of the Year
  • Award in the Field of Science
  • Award in the Field of Community Service
  • South Asian Business Woman of the Year
  • South Asian Small Business of the Year
  • South Asian Youth of the Year
  • South Asian Sports Person of the Year
  • South Asian Diversity Award

The jury will also select 25 South Asians in Canada who will form the CIBC Midweek South Asian Power List. Individuals will be selected on the basis of financial status, community service, position in public service office, head of a business house, influence in the South Asian and mainstream community, and popularity.

South Asians form a large and vibrant community in Canada – close to 1.5 million. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, South Asians have been settling in Canada and further diversifying the country. Presently, South Asians are actively involved in Canadian politics at all levels, run small to large-scale businesses, participate in community service, and hold positions of influence in various sectors.
