Defence giant, BAE Systems has signed a £1.6 billion contract to supply Hawk aircraft to Saudi Arabia, saving over 200 U.K. jobs. It is a substantial win for the British defence giant, as the deal offers some welcome relief to the struggle against shrinking European and American defence budgets and fierce competition. Germany's Fiscal Situation The Blind Leading the Blind

Germany's Fiscal Situation The Blind Leading the Blind

With Europe still circling the white porcelain bowl, I thought it was time to revisit the fiscal situation in Germany, the lynchpin that seems to be the only thing that is holding Europe together.   It is still very early in the fiscal year so trends in Germany's finances are relatively meaningless at this point in time.  However, there is still some interesting information to be gleaned from the latest Federal Ministry of Finance Monthly Report for March 2012 and the March 2012 Federal budget key figures.     Let's open by looking at a chartshowing the fiscal deficit for January to March of 2011 compared to the same period in 2012 and the projected deficit for the entire fiscal year:     The deficit for the three month period was €24.04 billion, down marginally from €25.499 billion... Iran Hopes to Export Electricity to Cover for Reduced Oil Demand

Middle East, Wednesday, May 23rd 2012

Iran Hopes to Export Electricity to Cover for Reduced Oil Demand

Against the backdrop of discussions about pending negotiations over its controversial nuclear program and the upcoming deadline of an European embargo on Iranian oil comes a quiet push by the Islamic republic to become a major electricity exporter. Tehran had said it was expecting to secure electricity deals with Syria and Lebanon and had somehow attracted an estimated $1 billion to help build new power plants in the country. With some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, Tehran might be able to shrug off international sanctions by embracing an ambitious electricity agenda. European restrictions on Iranian oil go into force later this summer. Some U.S. allies in the European and Asian community have already started taking steps away from Iranian crude oil purchases in an effort to escape... Read more

British Hindus ask for apology from Church of Scotland

South Asians Abroad, Wednesday, May 23rd 2012

Hindus have strongly objected to Hindu deities being reportedly referred to as "false idols" on the opening day of the General Assembly of Church of Scotland on May 19 in Edinburgh (United Kingdom). Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said  that about one billion Hindus worldwide  worshipped their deities almost on a daily basis and labeling them as “false”  was highly hurting their feelings. {ads1}Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, asked apology from Church of Scotland for this inappropriate language as these deities were highly revered in Hinduism. Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken lightly. Symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled, Zed stated. Rajan... Read more

Toronto Blue Jays Sweep Two game Set Against New York Yankees

Brazilian-born Yan Gomes Gets Two Hits to Make Successful Major League Debut As has been the case for many seasons the Toronto Blue Jays realize that for the team to even have a sniff at the playoffs it will have to play well and pick up important wins against other teams in a tough American League East division. After snapping a seven game losing streak to division opponents in Wednesday’s 8-1 against the New York Yankees, the Blue Jays (21-18) completed the sweep of a mini two-game with a 4-1 win at Rogers Centre. Once again the long ball played a big part in the win as both Jose Bautista and J.P. Arencibia smacked two-run homeruns giving starting pitcher Drew Hutchison (3-1) more than enough offence to secure his third win in six... Read more

I'm not sure how many of you remember the Lombard Challenge from 1996, but those of you who do will remember it as the U-15 cricket world cup that was held in England during the summer of 96. Called the Lombard Challenge U-15 Cup, the competition was contested by 10 teams including all the 9 test playing nations at the time and Canada. I was in Pakistan for my summer holidays at the time when the tournament was being played and I remember watching all the games Live on Star Sports. It was quite interesting to watch the potential future Pakistan stars competing at a global stage. What made it even more exciting was that the Pakistan team was quite dominant and from what I recall, it won most, if not all,... Read more

Arkansas Players Arrested for Burglarizing Fellow Students

Three Arkansas Razorback football players who have been charged with stealing from fellow students are out of jail after being arrested. Marquel Wade, Andrew Peterson and Maudrecus Humphrey all posted bond on Sunday.  One has to wonder about the culture on this team where members, allegedly,  have stolen from fellow classmates. Presumably these are Division I scholarship athletes who enjoy the finical support of the school directly and the state taxpayers indirectly.  If these charges are true (and the initial reports are compelling), the coaching staff needs to look at who they are recruiting and how they ended up with a group that preys upon fellow students, almost all of whom have worked and paid for their spot on campus.  The temerity to take cash and property from other students as... Liberals: One Year Later

Columns, Wednesday, May 23rd 2012

{ads1}We've passed the one year mark since the devastating Liberal election defeat.  The questions moving forward revolve around any apparent progress in "rebuilding" the Liberal party, positioning itself to be a credible alternative next time around.  I would argue a "mixed bag" at best, some positive signs intermingled with objectively concerning trends. On the encouraging front, despite relegation to third party status, Liberals continue to outpace the Official Opposition in terms of fundraising, a fact that receives little attention.  While the Liberals still trail the Conservatives, the fact fundraising hasn't dried up or waned in the wake of 2011 does suggest an internal resilience.  In fact, the mood within hardcore Liberal ranks remains largely optimistic, despite certain realities, there is a clear fighting spirit which continually manifests itself, within various party... Significant risk in Afghan missions as Canadian soldier dies in Kabul blast

PM Stephen Harper admits the high risk involved in NATO training mission after a Canadian soldier passed away on Saturday. Master Corporal Byron Greff along with 16 others part of the NATO training mission were reported dead in a suicide bomb attack in Kabul. Greff is the first Canadian soldier who died in Afghanistan after the end of military operations in July. PM Harper offered his condolences to Greff’s loved ones. He said: “I’ve always been clear there are still risks involved in this mission. Any mission in Afghanistan involves significant risk. … Any presence in Afghanistan, as I know from my own travel there, is fraught with risk, so there will remain risk to our defence personnel.” On the other hand, skeptics believe PM Harper calculatedly understated the risk involved in the... Deus Ex Machina started off a few years ago in Sydney, Australia. So far, they’ve reached and branched to Bali and California and they seem unstoppable. With their philosophy of giving their customers the whole sensation, the satisfaction of every kind in relation to simple pleasures, they’ve won me over quite some time ago. Because, as I am being told, Australia is some number of kilometers away from Europe, it is impossible for me to get a motorcycle done by them. Science, Tuesday, April 24th 2012

Update 115am CDT 4/23/2012: Per the Japanese.. last time this sort of thing occurred was about 300 years ago: http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/features/science/T120420005829.htm Quote the article: "Magnetic field polarity at the solar poles will reverse and become quadrupolar in May, meaning positive fields will emerge in the North and South poles and negative fields will emerge on the equator, according to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and other institutes. Just How Green is Google

Google may have a bad track record on privacy practices, but when it comes to green, the internet giant is clean, racking up over $850 million in investments to develop and deploy clean energy and earning the top spot on Greenpeace's list of IT giants who are using and advocating for clean energy. In February, Greenpeace ranked Google the best on its "Cool IT Leaderboard", although it only scored 53 out of 100 points on the ranking system, still putting it ahead of Cisco, with 49 points. But it was a reluctant gift from Greenpeace, which has been hounding the IT giant for some time over its long overdue moves to shift to green and to use its influence and outreach to advocate for renewable energy. Google may have gotten off to... Read more

Is Andre 3000 “experienced” Enough To Play Jimi Hendrix

{ads1}Hands down, the best live concert we ever experienced was Jimi Hendrix playing in Milwaukee with the British band The Soft Machine opening for him. We weren’t necessarily Jimi fans, a musician from The Soft Machine invited us, and we went to see THEM. But Jimi Hendrix completely blew us away! He was an incredibly powerful stage presence and he had style beyond our wildest dreams at that time. So, we have been eagerly anticipating the film of his life story. “All Is By My Side”starts filming this month in Ireland and it’s about Jimi’s early career years. Andre Benjamin from OutKast is tackling the tough role of Jimi, and while he’s sartorially appropriate, we wonder if he can sing like Jimi. The Hendrix estate proved to be SO uncooperative that all of Jimi’s songs are being re-recorded with... Read more

The Avengers, Adoption and an Asgardian Firestorm

I'm sure we have all at one time or another committed a faux pas, a momentary lapse of good judgement. However, I'm also sure that said faux pas was committed in front of a small group of family or friends. An apology is delivered sincerely and immediately and we have quickly defused a potentially ugly situation. But what if you were given a budget of two hundred and twenty million dollars and your lapse of good judgement found itself forever committed to film and distributed across the planet in what critics have lauded with a 93% ranking on Rotten Tomatoes? Oh great, you'll be offending people for years to come and future generations will be likewise calling you a dunderhead. In the recently released film "The Avengers", wunderkind Joss Whedon did... Pomplamoose Let’s Go For A Ride

Has the fun duo lost their mojo? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBuAnmEqPeU Only 30 seconds of the 2:38 new video is music. The remainder is an extended pitch for their new EP and soap? Pomplamoose is Nataly Dawn, the photogenic jazz singer / gamine with cool harmonies, and Jack Conte the multi-instrumentalist, music producer and master of cute innovative videos. They seemed to be the perfect example of new music that could become popular on social media – YouTube, Facebook, Twitter. Two years ago they were turning out new songs and covers at the rate of one every few months. Success! They were a hit. 8 million people watched Nataly sing ‘Lady Gaga Telephone’. Last year the Angry Birds cover was another popular song with 4 million hits on YouTube. But the pace slowed with only 2 real songs in the... Read more

Music Review Yeh Khula Aasmaan

Music :: Filmi, Monday, May 21st 2012

EXPECTATIONS There isn't much known about the film Yeh Khula Aasmaan expect for the fact that it is about a boy who is facing challenges in his life during his growing up years. Since the film has an offbeat theme, one expects the same from the music as well. The film marks the comeback of composer duo of Anand-Milind but one does wonder what's the kind of soundtrack they would have in the offing here. Ravi Chopra is the lyricist. MUSIC The way 'Har Ghadi' begins, one is instantly reminded of 'Jab Koyi Baat Bigad Jaaye' [Jurm] which itself was an inspiration from a Western song. Nevertheless, despite the similarities here, 'Har Ghadi' by Kunal Ganjawalla does stay with you after it has been heard first. A sad song about the protagonist who... Read more

Dear JP Morgan The speed limit is 60 mph

The bank J PMorgan Chase has lost two billion dollars. To paraphrase Jamie Dimon, current chairman, president, and chief executive officer of the bank, "Oops, sorry. It won't happen again." Am I having a flashback to 2008? The United States, no the entire world, went through the biggest financial crisis since The Wall Street Crash of 1929. Now, just three plus years later, where are we? Little has been done to legislate reforms in the banking industry and both Wall... Read more
