Third Baseman Breaks Finger in Practice on Wednesday
The Toronto Blue Jays did receive some bad news prior to the start of Wednesday’s game. Third baseman Brett Lawrie was fielding ground balls before the game in batting practice and fractured his right middle finger. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list after x-rays revealed a non-displaced fracture.
“Just little bumps in the road, stuff you got to grow up on and just realize that it’s part of life, part of the game and just little things that happen that you just need to overcome and be professional and just suck it up,” said Lawrie.
“I didn’t think anything of it and then we put it under the x-ray machine and sure enough there was something in there which I didn’t really think there was going to be.”
With the season coming to an end in a week, the Jays were not taking any chances with Lawrie and made an easy choice of shutting him down for the rest of the year.
“Anytime you’re looking at a fracture you’re in that 4-6 week period. It’s a non-displaced fracture right now which is a good thing in this case,” said Blue Jays Manager John Farrell. “If he were to continue you run the risk of dislodging and then you’re looking at a pin and a potential surgery.”
“So while he’s had a very encouraging showing – he’s had a fantastic six weeks or so since he’s been here. It’s unfortunate that the year ends prematurely for him – when you look at broken bones – it’s been a tough year for him in that regard. But what he’s shown on the field is very, very bright future.”
Earlier this season, Lawrie was on the brink of being called up to the Jays from Triple-A Las Vegas when he was hit by pitch and suffered a fractured left hand.
Added Lawrie, “Yeah I got one in my left and one in my right so hopefully I got it all out of my system for the next little while. It’s one of those things just got a bit of bad luck – got to keep my chin up and keep moving on.”
“If I were to play, which I think I could just because I’m just comparing this to my left hand and what I did inLas Vegas- comparing that there’s no comparison to the pain. It’s still a bit sore and it’s going to be it’s a broken bone and they do heal but time’s going to tell.”
Considering he batted a .293 with nine homeruns and 25 RBI’s in just 43 games – as Farrell put it – his future is certainly bright. However, this latest setback caps what has been a rollercoaster season for the Jays rookie but it was his first setback that had him doubting his chances of making it to the big leagues this season. However, that did not slow him down and he eventually received the call up he was anxiously waiting for.
“When I look back at the year it’s been an interesting year,” said Lawrie. “I’ve had a lot of ups and a lot of downs, especially when I broke my hand the first time, my left hand, that’s when it really seemed like things were going down and didn’t feel like anything was going right and it didn’t feel like I could ever battle back from it and get to the big leagues.
“But sure enough I overcame it and I got here. This is my dream, this is what I’ve always wanted to do and I finally got here. It’s just a shame something like this happens but it’s just another little bump in the road, just going to have to move on and hopefully come back next year.”
