Wasim prefers Single Head Coach

Wasim Akram has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board to appoint a single head coach, rather than three separate ones for bowling, batting and fielding.

With the team currently playing without a permanent head coach, the PCB has been on the look out for a candidate ever since Wasim’s former colleague Waqar Younis, left the job in September, citing health reasons

Ex-opening batsman, Mohsin Khan, has been handling the role on an interim basis, and has hinted that he is prepared to continue doing so.

However, the PCB has formed a three-man committee to hunt for a suitable replacement for Younis, preferrably a foreigner.

Recently installed PCB chief, Zaka Ashraf, has declared that there is a need for separate batting, fielding and bowling coaches, in addition to a head coach. However, Wasim believes such a move would only make matters worse.

“I think the idea of separate coaches doesn’t suit Pakistan,” Wasim told the AFP.

“Pakistan need one head coach who should guide the team. In case of too many coaches, things will only get complicated.”

Five candidates have already been short-listed by the Committee but there has been no further development on the issue as Ashraf is firm on his stand with regard to the number of coaches required.

According to reliable sources within the PCB, former Australian batsman, Dav Whatmore, who powered Sri Lanka to World Cup glory in 1996, is the front-runner for the vacant seat.
