Ashish Bagai will lead Canada on to the field as the 4th Canadian to captain his country at the Cricket World Cup.

Bagai was confirmed by the selectors as the final squad for the 2011 Cricket World Cup was named Wednesday in Toronto.

Joining Bagai as returnees from the 2007 Caribbean World Cup team are paceman Henry Osinde and all rounder John Davison. Both Bagai and Davison played in the 2003 edition of the World Cup as well.

The rest of the players will take the field for Canada in their first world cups and for the first time ever 7 players that came through Canada?s youth programs will be part of Canada’s World Cup squad.

Bagai and Zubin Surkari (America’s u19), will be joined by Nitish Kumar, Hiral Patel, Ruvindu Gunaskera, Parth Desai, and Hamza Tariq (all Canada u19) as almost half of the players named were developed in the Canadian youth system.

Also making debuts for Canada in a World Cup squad are Tyson Gordon, Karl Whatham, Balaji Rao, Harvir Baidwan, Khurram Chohan, Rizwan Cheema and Jimmy Hansra.

The team leaves for a pre-tournament training camp in Dubai on January 26th and will head to Bangladesh on February 8th for tune-up matches against Bangladesh and England before opening the tournament February 20th against Sri Lanka.

Tariq will accompany the squad to the world cup and will serve as the reserve wicket keeper.

Batsmen Tyson Gordon has been named in the squad while he awaits confirmation of his Canadian citizenship from the government of Canada. Cricket Canada expects this to be completed in the coming days but has named a standby in the event citizenship to Gordon is not granted in time.

Cricket Canada is still awaiting Indian visa?s for Cheema, Chohan and Tariq but will take them to the World Cup. Recent correspondence from the ICC has assured Cricket Canada that visa?s will be granted for all participants in the 2011 Cricket World Cup.
