MIKE BABCOCK POSTGAME: DECEMBER 19, 2016

On Anaheim controlling the faceoff circle:

I thought they dominated the circle against us. It was just our lines weren’t as good. Obviously the Bozak line with Marner and van Riemsdyk is way better with Bozak in the middle and Willy [Nylander] has been playing the wing and he has been playing the wing for a while. So, we weren’t as good in that position. To tell you the truth I [Gauthier] gave us good minutes when he played. It was a game we’d like to have found a way to win, that’s the bottom line. They got two power play goals – one ricochet and one bounce off the faceoff. Good for them, not good for us.

On giving Matthews big minutes:

I thought [Matthews] was great. I thought he was our best player. I thought he was really good. I don’t know what you guys thought, but I thought he was fantastic. When he was with Brown and Hyman, I thought really good. When we had to move Brown to try and get something else going though, I don’t know if that helped us. They’re a good solid team, they’ve got good centres. Vermette is real strong even though he’s their third-line centre. He’s strong in the circle as well. [Getzlaf] and Kesler are no slouches. It was a handful for some of our guys tonight.

On if he trusts Matthews to play tough matchups:

For sure. As long as you play him with competitive guys, he’s good. I thought he really stepped up tonight and he was solid.

On the number of penalties the team has taken in recent games:

We don’t have enough discipline. The bottom line is you’ve got to have better discipline or you hurt yourself. The last two games, guys sat on the bench because we took too many penalties. Any way you look at it that affected tonight’s game. We’ve got to have more discipline and that comes with your structure, that comes with your referee, that comes with everything. Our players should have more discipline than we had tonight if we want to win.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (25 SAVES): DECEMBER 19, 2016

On playing his former team:

I would have loved the win; we didn’t get one tonight.

On if he notices tendencies in his former teammates:

You kind of know the shots the guy usually use – their release and stuff – the power play a little bit. They like to throw stuff on net and see what happens. That’s what they did today.

On the goals against as unlucky:

All three, I think. they weren’t the release they wanted on the shots. That happens sometimes.

On killing off three penalties in the first period:

It was good but I think it was too much. We need to start sitting less in the box because we’re giving them looks and eventually they’re going to figure it out. That’s what happens. If you give teams too many looks on the PP, they’re going to look for adjustments.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (1 GOAL, 21:22 TOI): DECEMBER 19, 2016

On tonight’s penalties:

I thought we played well but you take that many penalties against a good team like that, it’s going to cost you. They had two power play goals including the game-winner. That’s something we can’t let happen, we’ve got to stay disciplined.

On his redirection to score:

It’s just something you see on the ice. The puck was going a little wide so I tried to get a stick on it and get it to the net. That’s a big thing with our team, we want our D to get pucks through. Zaitsev did a good job getting it there.

On facing Anaheim in the faceoff circle:

It was really tough. All four of those guys, they really bear down. We knew going in it was going to be a challenge. A couple of the faceoffs cost us so it’s a good lesson for us going where we need to be. That’s a really good team right there.

JAMES van RIEMSDYK (14:35 TOI, 3 Shots): DECEMBER 19, 2016

On the number of penalties:

It’s pretty obvious we spent a little bit too much time in the box. They got two of their goals on the power play so obviously that was the difference in the game. Hopefully we can learn from that and move forward.

On what contributed to the loss:

We made a couple too many turnovers at the bluelines, I thought. They didn’t let us get our cycle game going as much as we would have liked. Some mistakes we can definitely clean up.

On the play of his line:

It was one of those games where there the flow was kind of weird with all the penalties and stuff. I thought we did some okay things – obviously we were a minus so that’s never a good thing. We’ll continue to work at it tomorrow.
