POSTGAME QUOTES:

HEAD COACH MIKE BABCOCK

On Ottawa’s tying power play:

It’s unfortunate the puck went out. I thought we were playing a good period. I think they had three shots to that point and I thought we were doing a real good job. It’s a tough break for Marty that it went over. And, Freddy [Andersen], obviously it was deflected and he thought it was going one way and it went back the other and through him. It’s disappointing. It’s disappointing to lose in the shootout. I thought we did a lot of good things. It was the game I expected. I expected it to be 2-1 and a tight game.

On why the team has struggled to win in the shootout:

I don’t know. Maybe the other goalies are good, maybe we’re not any good at it. We work on it every single pregame skate. It’s just something we’ll have to get better at obviously because we’ve left points – I think we’re 1-6 or something aren’t we? So we’ll just keep working on it like we do as a special team. We do the same thing with our power play and our penalty kill and our faceoffs. We’ll work at it. We’re not as good at faceoffs as we’d like to be either so we have lots of work to do and we’ll just keep doing it.

On the team’s effort tonight:

I thought we played good, I had no problem – I didn’t like our first period, we took three penalties all for sticks. All penalties, all stick fouls, all for no reason. Put your stick down on the puck. I thought they were way heavier on their sticks in the first period than we were and more competitive. I thought once we got through the first period we were a much better hockey club and played pretty good.

On Marincin’s return to the lineup:

I thought Marty was good. Obviously he didn’t want to shoot it over the glass but I thought he played steady. He’s a big guy, long reach, good penalty killer. I thought he was steady.

On the play of the veterans:

I thought the guys were good. There wasn’t much room out there for either team so it was more of a grind and work game. If you want to be fancy or that it’s a different game you’re playing at. I thought early in the game they were more competitive than us and I thought as the game went on we did a real nice job. I’ve got no problem with today’s game. I would have liked to get the extra point, they got the extra point but we’ve got a day off tomorrow. Let’s have a breather and get ready to go.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (25 SAVES)

On tonight’s game:

I think we played really good until the shootout. I think everything but the shootout was great – obviously it’s a little bit of a coin flip when you get there. Aside from that we played great.

On if he scouts players ahead of the shootout:

We talk about some stuff. We don’t really go too deep into that.

On Pyatt’s shootout winning goal:

He did a deke and I don’t know how it went through there but he snuck it back in. He made a great move.

NAZEM KADRI (2 ASSISTS, 16:24 TOI)

On losing in the shootout:

It’s obviously a tough way to go down but, like I’ve said many times, you can’t get too high when you win a shootout, you can’t get too [low when you lose a shootout]. I think we played pretty steady throughout the whole game, we’ve just got a couple of things we need to tweak, but obviously getting in the shootout it’s almost like going to the judge. It’s a bit of a tough way to lose but nothing you can do about it.

On giving up a third period lead:

They pushed but we pushed back, I don’t think we were too passive. We had plenty of opportunities, it was just an unfortunate bounce for the puck to over the glass and they capitalized on the power play.

On if he knew his shot was tipped on Martin’s goal:

I had no idea. I was trying to put it five-hole anyways but I thought it went off the defenceman’s stick. I don’t think I placed it really where I wanted it to. Good thing [Martin] got a tip on it and it went five-hole.

On the difference in effort between the first 20 minutes and last 40 minutes:

I think we got off to a little bit of a slow start but, honestly, there wasn’t much out there. They’re a pretty structured team and pretty passive through the neutral zone so it’s tough to get room. A lot of shifts are going to be 50/50 and not much happens, but that’s where you’ve got to be patient. We found a way to get a couple of goals but unfortunately it wasn’t good enough.

MITCH MARNER (SHOOTOUT GOAL, 18:44 TOI)

On his shootout goal:

I kind of just came in slowly and tried to pick the pace up a little bit and try to pull it backhand – back through to the forehand – and it worked.

On if he has experience using the move:

I’ve never really had too many shootouts until I came here. I’ve tried it in practice a couple of times and sometimes it worked. I thought that’s a move that I could try.

On waiting for the review:

Obviously it’s kind of scary. They took a little longer than I think everyone expected it to. When they start waiting like that you think it’s not going to happen. It was a pretty big relief getting that one. Obviously it would have been nice to get a couple more and win that game.
