POSTGAME QUOTES:

HEAD COACH MIKE BABCOCK

On Andersen winning the game for the team:

For sure, no question. It’s going to – some nights they’re ugly. [Detroit GM] Kenny Holland always used to say it’ll be a Picasso in the morning when you look at the standings. That’s what it is. They were quicker and jumped better than us. Obviously, we scored some good goals and some timely goals, but Freddie was the main event for sure. I thought Luongo played unbelievable in Florida, we had clear-cut great chances so we didn’t end up getting the two points. I thought tonight Freddie did the same for us and gave us a real opportunity.

On Leivo scoring:

It’s good. He got himself a goal and that’s positive. I don’t think anybody in our organization doesn’t think he can’t help, you’ve got to take someone’s job. That’s the issue with it. He’s just got to keep battling. We’re going to change our lineup for tomorrow and get fresh guys in. We’re going to talk about that on the plane and get ready.

On the slow starts:

We’re just going to talk about it and fix it. Players aren’t happy, I’m not happy, so we’ll fix that. You don’t want to play catch-up – now, we didn’t and sometimes on the road especially, you’ve got to weather the storm early in the first 10 minutes. That wasn’t weathering, that was just getting beat to the puck.

On Soshnikov’s play since his recall:

He hasn’t been like he normally is out there. So, for whatever reason, that’s part of it. We didn’t bring Sosh here to judge him here in two days or anything like that so you’ve just got to get back to work.

On winning games despite being outshot:

I don’t worry about getting outshot if we start on time and get the lead and the way the game is you get outshot. That wasn’t the case here tonight, though. That’s a different kind of outshot. I think lots of times when you have the lead, especially in the third, you get outshot. I don’t worry about that. Tonight, when they start on time and we didn’t, that’s a concern, so we’ll fix it.

On Marleau scoring another game-winner:

Yeah, he’s got to track [Brendan Shanahan] down. I’m hoping he’s tracking him down before the end of the year, I think he needs eight more to track Shanny down or something – seven more. So, if we could get that this year, that would be good.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (43 SAVES)

On tonight’s game:

We know they come out fast. They came out faster than us in the first but after that we picked it up a little bit, got some good goals in a few opportunities there and had some good shots by the guys. Obviously a big second period allowed us to get back into it for the win.

On what needs to be done to limit shots by the opposition:

The beginning is really important. We’ve got to be ready to play. I think the last few games we haven’t been prepared but I think every guy has got to be ready to play and take it upon himself to focus for the first shift. The first 10 minutes can be huge in a game like this and we’re lucky we didn’t get behind. We know we have the skills to score and we’ve just got to be ready to play:

On the last couple of minutes in the game:

They’ve obviously got some momentum. They picked up a couple of goals late there but we held our ground 6-on-5 there so that was a good job. Some big blocks. Some good sticks with their passes trying to get to the back door. We did well there.

RON HAINSEY (1 GOAL)

On Frederik Andersen’s performance:

Hell of a game. Not a good first certainly for us. We picked it up in the second. Obviously, we were holding on in the third. He’s been giving us all the goaltending we could ask for, for quite a while now. I don’t want to remiss and say how long but he’s been one of our best players for a while now, no question.

On if there’s concern that the team is being outshot:

You know, we talked about this morning, as far as the starts – I think it’s three in a row, where the start has definitely been poor. Something like 10-1 in shots, 8-1. We talked about it tonight, about getting off to a good start. Our first shift, two shifts, were actually decent. We didn’t get any shots but we were down in their end and then we took the penalty and then it was probably five minutes after that, so a good seven minutes where we did not have much success getting out. Once we started flipping pucks behind them, as boring as that is, we had some more success getting out. They were on top of us, we were trying to make plays and it just wasn’t happening. They really took control of the play for that seven minutes with the powerplay or so.

On how it felt to score his goal:

It’s always good to score in the NHL. I’d be lying if it wasn’t. That got us up to three or whatever, but I don’t get any more joy scoring against (Carolina). I have a lot of people over there who helped me and it’s a team I’m rooting for but as I said, scoring in the NHL is never a bad deal, except for this interview stuff.

On the defence contributing on all five Maple Leafs goals:

Getting pucks in. If we can be up on their forwards supporting our guys, so even when the puck comes around the wall, keeping it back down. We’ve got so many guys who are gifted goal scorers that if we can get them some looks, some opportunities, these guys can put the puck in the net, we know that. So that’s what we’re focusing on and obviously if we get a chance to shoot one off a turnover or something, we’ll take it.

ZACH HYMAN (1 GOAL)

On Andersen’s play:

Not only the first period, the second and third, we definitely needed him tonight. We weren’t too good, but he made some huge saves for us and he got us a win.

On scoring the first goal of the game:

It was great. We had a rocky first and to come out early in the second and get us a lead and get a good roll going, it was important for us. It was good.

On the slow starts:

It’s tough. It’s not like you’re going out there and you don’t want to play well. I think it just comes down to bearing down and just being ready and competing right from the puck drop. The past couple of games we’ve been down on the shot clock really early and heavily. We’ve been battling back, but we just have to start on time. It’s easy to say that but we’ve got to do it.

On holding Carolina off at the end of the game:

Like I said, Freddie was big for us. It’s tough. We had a big lead, 5-2 I think, and then they came back. They’re a hard-working team, they don’t give up and they work. It was good to hang on.

JOSH LEIVO (1 GOAL)

On his goal:

I just wanted to put it on net. It was a great play off the wall. I pushed the pace and had the opportunity. It was good to capitalize and get the win.

On his past success scoring on his off-wing:

Yeah, I guess I’ve had a lot of luck with that one. I think it falls back into the play by our ‘D’ [Borgman] chipping it out and giving me the opportunity to do that. I just had the chances by our D-men and I’ve just got to keep with it.

On how it felt to score:

It feels good. It feels better to get the win. If we didn’t have Fred [Andersen] tonight, I don’t know what the score would be. A slow start, but great to get the win.

On Andersen’s performance:

That first period was an onslaught, they just kept coming at us. We were lucky to get out with no goals on us and the second period we obviously had a lot of chances and played better. In the third he just shut the door again.

On if he has put more pressure on himself to score in his limited games to this point:

Yeah, I think you’re always putting pressure on yourself no matter what. It’s the NHL, you don’t get that many opportunities. You’ve just got to make sure you’re ready when the chance comes.

PATRICK MARLEAU (GAME-WINNING GOAL)

On Andersen’s play:

It was pretty impressive. I think you’ll have to give him a couple of waters to get him hydrated again. He played great tonight.

On if he expected to have the game-winner when he made it 5-2:

No, definitely not. They came back, they had a hard push there and Freddie held us in.

On getting outshot in recent games:

I think early on in games we need to flip the table and start getting our game going right from the drop of the puck. We’ve talked about it and we’ve got tomorrow to try and get it going the right way.

On the slow starts:

Probably just a little too slow at the start, not executing. Other teams are coming out prepared to play and for whatever reason we haven’t been – we’ve been winning draws and in the last three or four games we won the draws and we didn’t get the puck in [the offensive zone]. Then they get going and they get into a rhythm. It’s something we have to try and change tomorrow.

On getting goals from Hainsey, Hyman and Leivo:

Those are huge goals and they all did a great job tonight.
