POSTGAME QUOTES:

HEAD COACH MIKE BABCOCK

On tonight’s win:

I just think that we started really good. I thought we really controlled the first period, I thought they really controlled the second. In this league if you start on time things tend to go well for you and our power play was really dangerous here tonight. Willy [Nylander], for the minutes he played, was as good as you can play. Our fourth line was good. They’re a dangerous team, they do real well off the rush, they activate their D. I thought the game was probably exciting for the fans but it wasn’t very exciting for me. In the end, we found a way to win a game and that’s what you’ve got to do on the road. Sometimes they’re ugly, but you find a way to win.

On the Oilers fourth line getting seven points:

I guess the way I look at it is Willy was playing on fourth line too and he had three so, I mean, that way you look at it, you don’t draw it up like that. You think McDavid and Matthews and those kind of guys are going to have the opportunities, but that’s the way it goes some nights. That’s why you have four lines and six ‘D’.

On Nylander loosening up after a three-point night:

Yeah, but he’s got the same amount of points he had last year. So, if you look at it today, he’s going to have more points than he had last year. I don’t know what it’s all about, just play hard and work hard and you’re a really talented player, the League is really hard. Your first year no one knows who you are and after that they know who you are. If you want to be a star, you’ve got to dig in and become an everydayer. It’s a hard league and it’s supposed to be a hard league. The best league in the world is supposed to be hard, and if you want to be a guy who becomes a star, it’s about heart and soul and digging in and getting better.

On being 10-0-0 when leading after two periods:

Knock on wood here – obviously, it’s important. You want to get ahead and stay ahead and you want to win games. You want to be able to close out games. I thought tonight, even when we went ahead, there wasn’t much time left, but we still did a good job in that area.

On Matthews’ effort playing through illness:

I thought that line was dominant in the first and I didn’t think they were quite as good after that, and yet they were still solid. He was good in the faceoff circle, he had great opportunities. The kid in net made two unbelievable saves off of him and, so, in the end, we won the game. That’s why you come to the rink. Good night for us and we can move on from here.

NAZEM KADRI (1 GOAL)

On the game-winning goal:

Yeah, [Patrick Marleau] did a great job buying some space, beating one guy and getting a good opportunity. The puck just came off the goalie, I just tried to pressure the defenceman to try and get a secondary opportunity and just lift his stick and I think he panicked a little bit, the puck was bouncing and I think he just ended up shooting it into his own net so good bounce for us… I had no idea what happened originally. I just saw the goal light on and the puck behind him, I kind of figured that’s what happened but wasn’t hundred percent sure and obviously a fortunate bounce for us but two points is two points.

On celebration after the game winning goal:

Yeah, I was lost, I had no idea what happened. I just saw everyone kind of skate towards us and fortunate bounce I guess. I don’t really know how to describe it.

On the Oilers’ second period push:

They did push in the second, they dominated in the second period, for sure. That’s what you expect from a team that has that much skill and having the first period that they had, being down a couple of goals you expect a push back. That’s what playing on the road is all about, weathering the storm for a little bit, capitalizing on opportunities and getting a little bit lucky.

PATRICK MARLEAU (1 GOAL)

On getting the fifth goal:

Probably should have had a couple more during the game before that, just a lucky bounce. It was good timing.

On if he’s had a strange play lead to a goal like tonight:

Yeah, that late in the game – I’ve had one of those before where it has gone in off somebody else – but that late in the game, I don’t think I’ve had that. Like I said, pretty fortunate bounce.

On being 10-0-0 when leading through two periods:

I think obviously that’s something you take pride in and something we work at. Hopefully we can keep it going.

AUSTON MATTHEWS (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On the game-winning goal:

Yeah crazy, pretty fortunate bounce for us. Definitely didn’t envision the game ending like that but it’s a win and we’ll take the two points and move on to Vancouver.

On the team’s start tonight:

I think that’s the start you definitely need against a team like because they can skate and they have a lot of skill. When you put them back on their heels and have them play D-zone that’s what you want, ultimately, to force them all the way back into their zone and have to break out. The start that we had was definitely the one we wanted.

On playing against Connor McDavid:

It’s tough anytime you go up against a player of his caliber – you have to be ready. It gets pretty tiring chasing him around all night. He can absolutely fly out there so you have to be prepared when playing a player like that.
