Marlies Finish Eight-Game Road Trip on Friday Night in Grand Rapids
Toronto Returns to Ricoh Coliseum for Back-to-Back Home Games on Saturday & Sunday

Opponents This Week:

(Jan. 22): The Marlies end their eight-game road trip on Friday night with a game against the Grand Rapids Griffins, AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, at Van Andel Arena. The Griffins currently post a record of 21-21-0-1 for 43 points and rank sixth in the North Division. They’ve only won three of their past 10 games overall and only have one victory at home since December 11. The matchup will be the fifth of six meetings, and second game at Van Andel Arena between the two division rivals. The last time the two clubs met, the Griffins downed the Marlies 7-2. Former Marlie forwards Kris Newbury and Jeremy Williams were the game’s first and second stars. Newbury notched a goal and two assists; while Williams set up the game’s first two goals and finished with two helpers on the night. The Griffins downed the Marlies in a shootout, 4-3, in their first meeting in Grand Rapids. Christian Hanson led all Marlies skaters with two assists in the loss. Andre Deveaux and Hanson have notched four points each against the Griffins this season through four games. Grand Rapids is a perfect 11-0-0-0 when taking the lead into the third period this season. Patrick Rissmiller paces the Griffins in scoring with 30 points (10 goals, 20 assists), followed by Williams who has 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists). Williams ranks first on the club in power play points (11) and power play goals (five). Newbury, the Marlies all-time goals leader, ranks second on the Griffins in penalty minutes with 121. Newbury holds the record for most points all-time by a Marlie, racking up 168 points (56 goals, 112 assists) in 198 career games. Marlies assistant head coach, Derek King played four seasons in Grand Rapids (1999-2000; 2002-04), and ranks seventh on their all-time games played list with 264. King ranks third on their all-time goals list (73), fourth in assists (130) and points (203), and second with a plus-71 rating.

(Jan. 23): The Marlies return home on Saturday night for their first home game in 21 days when they host the Hamilton Bulldogs, AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens, at 7:00 p.m. The game will be the fifth of 12 meetings this season, and third in Toronto, between the two teams. Each team has won two games against each other this season. In their most recent matchup, the Marlies dropped a 5-2 decision against the Bulldogs in Hamilton on December 28. The Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals to close out the game against Toronto. Ben Gordon and Stefano Giliati both scored their first goals of the season for the Marlies in the loss. The last meeting in Toronto between these two clubs, Viktor Stalberg scored the game-winner in overtime to give the Marlies the 6-5 victory. Andre Deveaux and Stalberg each finished the game with two goals apiece. The Marlies hold an all-time record of 28-10-3 against their QEW rivals. Hamilton currently leads the North Division and the Western Conference with a 26-11-3-4 record for 59 points. Despite their strong record, Hamilton hasn’t picked up a win over their past four games (0-2-1-1). Bulldogs goaltender Cedrick Desjardins and defenceman P.K. Subban both are taking part in this week’s AHL All-Star game festivities. Defenceman Yannick Weber was named to Switzerland’s Men’s Ice Hockey Team for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. In 40 games with the Bulldogs, Weber has tallied two goals and 18 assists. He’s also skated in three games with the Montreal Canadiens this season. Forward David Desharnais is currently riding a five-game point streak that has seen the Quebec native dish out eight assists for eight points. Desharnais ranks third in the league with five game-winning goals and ranks 13th in the AHL with six power play markers. He is the Bulldogs second-leading scorer and ranks 15th in the AHL with 14 goals and 24 assists for 38 points in just 30 games this season.

(Jan. 24): Toronto finishes their three-game weekend on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. when they host their former division-rivals, the Syracuse Crunch, AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. The matchup will be the first of two between the two clubs. The Crunch switched divisions over the summer and is currently in the East Division, where they rank sixth with a record of 16-21-3-3 for 38 points. They had their season-high four game winning streak and six game points streak snapped on Saturday with their loss against the Rochester Americans. The Marlies hold an all-time record of 15-13-4 against Syracuse. The Crunch has a record of 7-15-2-2 on the road this season. They’ve played the second fewest home games of any team in the AHL (17). Syracuse is undefeated in regulation when leading after two periods of play (9-0-1-1). Former Marlie Bates Battaglia currently plays for the Crunch and has notched 15 points (six goals, nine assists) through 26 games. Battaglia ranks second (tie) on the Marlies all-time points list with 144. Another former Marlie, Brendan Bell, ranks first on the Crunch in scoring, and eighth amongst defencemen in the AHL, with 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists). Bell, the Maple Leafs third round, 65th overall selection in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, appeared in 70 games with the Marlies during the 2005-06 season, registering six goals and 37 assists. Forward Derek MacKenzie is currently riding a three-game point streak (two goals, one assist). Alexandre Picard was assigned to the Crunch on Tuesday afternoon. Picard has skated in 27 games with Syracuse, racking up 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists).

MARLIES HEADLINES:

What Happened Last Week: The Marlies went 0-3-0-0 in three games this past week before the All-Star break. They opened their week with a 5-1 loss to the Texas Stars who rank third in the West Division. Richard Greenop scored his first career AHL goal for the Marlies only tally of the night. On Saturday in Houston, the Marlies dropped a 5-2 decision to the Aeros at Toyota Center. Nathan Smith struck twice for the Aeros; while Toronto got goals from Kyle Calder and Greg Scott. The Marlies finished their Texas swing on Sunday afternoon against Justin Pogge and the San Antonio Rampage. Pogge helped guide the Rampage to a 5-2 victory over his former club, making 29 saves. San Antonio’s power play clicked twice on five opportunities. The Marlies currently rank seventh in the North Division with a 15-20-5-2 record for 37 points.

Home Sweet Home: The Marlies have played their best hockey on home ice this season, holding an 11-5-3-0 advantage at Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies return home this Saturday for their first home game in 21 days when they host the Hamilton Bulldogs. With their win on January 2, Toronto has won nine of their last 15 games and has earned at least a point in 12 of their previous 16 contests on home ice. Toronto finishes their eight-game road trip this Friday night and then will play their next five of six games at Ricoh Coliseum.

Keeping It Close: The Marlies have a very impressive record this season when the game is decided by one goal, marking a record of 10-0-5-2. 10 of their 15 victories this season have come in one-goal contests. Troy Bodie leads the club with three game-winning tallies and Christian Hanson and Ryan Hamilton are tied for second with two each. The Marlies own an 8-0-2-1 record when taking the lead into the third period. Toronto won just their fourth game of the season on January 2 versus Milwaukee when trailing after two periods of play.
New Kids on the Block: The Marlies rookies were productive over the weekend for Toronto. Forward Greg Scott has notched a goal in each of his past two games. Scott’s shorthanded goal on Sunday against the Rampage was his fourth of the season. Richard Greenop scored his first career AHL goal on Friday night in the Marlies 5-1 loss to the Stars. Greenop, who entered the weekend with just one assist, registered two points over the three games in Texas (one goal, one assist). Robert Slaney notched an assist on Friday night and then added another helper on Sunday against the Rampage.

Foster The Statistics: Alex Foster returned to the Marlies line-up on January 8 against Peoria after missing the previous 18 games because of injury. In the three games he played on the road trip, Foster notched one assist. On November 23, the American Hockey League announced that he was named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending November 22. In three games during the week, Foster recorded six points (five goals, one assist) and a plus-two rating. In 11 games this season, the Marlies assistant captain has registered six goals and three assists.

Bo Knows: Tyler Bozak was recalled by the Maple Leafs on January 11. Last Thursday night against the Philadelphia Flyers, Bozak scored his first career NHL goal, added an assist and was named the game’s first star. Bozak has recorded at least a point in four of his six games while with the Maple Leafs this season. The 23 year old rookie recorded 10 points over his past 15 games (two goals, seven assists) with the Marlies. He paces the club with nine power play assists. On November 20 he added a career-high three assists, with two of them coming on the power play. In 32 games this season, he has tallied 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) and six penalty minutes. Bozak ranks first on the team in assists and fifth (tie) in the league in rookie power play assists (8).

Christian Keeping the Faith: Christian Hanson represented the PlanetUSA team at the 2010 Tim Warner AHL All-Star Classic last night in Portland, Maine. Hanson tallied one assist in PlanetUSA’s shootout loss to the Canadian All-Stars. The Glens Falls, NY native returned to the Marlies line-up on Sunday in San Antonio after missing the previous 13 games due to injury. Hanson has appeared in six games with the Maple Leafs this season, recording one assist and four penalty minutes. Hanson ranks third on the Marlies in points with 21 (nine goals, 12 assists). On November 20 in Lake Erie, he had the biggest night of his professional career, registering his first career AHL hat-trick and added an assist for four points. He currently ranks 20th (tie) in the American Hockey League in rookie scoring with 21 points, despite only playing in 23 games. He ranks first (active) on the Marlies forwards with a plus-four rating. He also ranks first (tie) on the Marlies in multi-point games with six.

Multi-Point Games: Juraj Mikus was the lone Marlie skater to record a multi-point game over the weekend. On Saturday evening in Houston, the Marlie defenceman chipped in with two assists for his second multi-point contest of the season. Christian Hanson and Viktor Stalberg share the team lead with six multi-point games this season.

Reading Report: The Toronto Maple Leafs ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals currently rank first in the East Division with a 22-14-1-3 record for 48 points. On Monday night the Royals defeated Trenton 4-3 in Reading, ending a six game homestand. Ben Gordon finished the night with a goal, an assist and first star honours. Gordon’s tallied 19 goals and 30 assists for 49 points in 33 games this season, ranking him third in the AHL and first on the Royals in points. He was named an alternate captain at the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game which takes place this week in Ontario, CA. Defenceman Eric Werner paces all defencemen on the Royals in points with 16 (three goals, 13 assists) and plus/minus (+16).

MARLIES QUICK HITS:

– Ashton Rome scored his first goal of the season on Sunday against the Rampage. In nine games with the Marlies, Rome has tallied three points (one goal, two assists).

– Adam Munro was released from his PTO contract on January 19. In 14 games with the Marlies, he compiled a record of 3-8-1 with a 3.14 goals-against average and 0.905 save percentage. On Friday night against Peoria, he tied Scott Clemmensen for fourth on the Marlies all-time games played list with 40 career appearances.

– Brennan Evans’ 138 penalty minutes currently ranks first in the AHL for defencemen and fourth overall.

– Viktor Stalberg was reassigned to the Marlies on Tuesday and skated in Toronto’s 5-1 loss on Friday night against Texas. In 22 games this season with the Marlies, Stalberg ranks second on the team in scoring with 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists).

– Andre Deveaux has registered 11 points over his past 19 games (seven goals, four assists). He ranks first on the club in points with 25 (10 goals, 15 assists) and is second in assists.

– Toronto owns a 4-0 record in the shootout on home ice, but has lost both shootouts (0-2) on the road this season.

Reebok/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE

For the week ending January 17, 2010, the Toronto Marlies nominated forward Greg Scott for consideration as the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week. Scott notched two goals over the weekend for the Marlies, including one shorthanded tally. On Saturday night he scored the first Marlie goal of the night and then on Sunday he scored on a breakaway while killing a penalty. The Victoria, BC native has skated in 35 games with the Marlies this season, recording four goals and seven assists for 11 points. Scott is perfect in the shootout this season, registering two goals on two attempts.

Recap: After allowing the game’s first three goals in the second period, the Marlies couldn’t climb back, falling 5-1 on Friday night. Down 3-0 in the second period, Richard Greenop gave the Marlies some life with his first career AHL goal. Ashton Rome started the play with a pass to Robert Slaney who found Greenop wide open for his first of the season. The Stars put the game away mid-way through the third period on the power play with a goal from Maxime Fortunus. Joey MacDonald made 15 saves in the loss. Texas’ power play went 2-for-6; while the Marlies couldn’t connect on four man-advantages.

Recap: Toronto’s second period struggles continued on Saturday night when they surrendered three, second period goals to the Aeros. After falling behind 4-0 through two periods of play, Greg Scott opened the third period with an early goal. Kyle Calder made it a 4-2 game with five minutes remaining in regulation with his second goal of the season. But while killing a penalty, Houston extended their lead back to three goals late in the game. After relieving Joey MacDonald in the second period, Andrew Engelage made 14 saves on 16 shots. Toronto’s penalty kill unit went 8-for-9 in the game, but their power play failed to score on seven chances.

Recap: The Marlies played against some familiar foes on Sunday afternoon, and fell to the Rampage 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. Ashton Rome got the Marlies on the board early with his first goal of the season. Richard Greenop and Robert Slaney each collected assists on the goal. Former Marlie Ryan Hollweg tied the game at 1-1 with five minutes remaining in the first frame. After falling behind 3-1 at the second intermission, Greg Scott scored while shorthanded with four minutes to play in the game. Sean Sullivan put the game out of reach on the same Rampage power play 35 seconds later. Former Marlie goalie Justin Pogge picked up an assist on the goal and made 29 saves in the win. Andrew Engelage turned aside 39 saves in the loss.
