Marlies Begin Four-Game Week on Wednesday Morning against Rampage
Toronto Hosts Three Games This Week; Face the Lake Erie Monsters Twice

Opponents This Week:

(Jan. 27): The Marlies kick off their four-game week with their second school day game of the season on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. when they host the San Antonio Rampage, AHL affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes. The Rampage enters the week with a record of 18-19-3-4 for 43 points, ranking seventh in the West Division. The two clubs met less than two weeks ago in San Antonio on January 22 with the Rampage winning 5-2. Mikkel Boedker scored a goal and added an assist, taking home first star honours in the game. Former Marlie, Ryan Hollweg scored the Rampage’s first goal of the game. San Antonio has dropped five of their past six games, including two straight shootout losses against Milwaukee. Wednesday’s game will be the start of the Rampage’s annual ‘rodeo road trip’, playing 14 straight games away from AT&T Center. The 14-game road trip will span over 29 days and will cover 8,614 miles. Last year the Rampage finished with a 4-5-2-2 record for 12 points on their road swing during the rodeo. They’ve posted a solid record against North Division foes this season (9-2-0-1). Eight out of their past 12 games have been decided by one goal, going 5-4-0-3 during that span. San Antonio’s all-star defenceman Sean Sullivan is currently tied for third amongst AHL blueliners in points (30) and second in goals (nine). Former Marlies goalie Justin Pogge made 29 saves against his former club on January 17, picking up the 5-2 win. Pogge ranks first on the Marlies all-time list in games played (142), wins (71) and shutouts (seven). He ranks first on the Rampage in goals-against average (2.39) and save-percentage (0.927). The Rampage is led by Brett MacLean who paces the club in points (31) and goals (18).

(Jan. 29 & 31): The Marlies play their lone road game of the week on Friday night when they travel to Cleveland to take on the Lake Erie Monsters, AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. The contest will be the seventh of eight meetings between the two teams, with Toronto holding a 4-2-0-0 advantage over their division foes. However, Lake Erie has won the past two matchups, including a 7-0 victory on December 27 at Ricoh Coliseum. Darren Haydar led the charge, posting two goals and an assist, and Tyler Weiman made 32 saves for the shutout. Lake Erie enters the week with a record of 21-21-0-4 for 46 points, ranking them fifth in the North Division. The Monsters have collected at least a point in nine of their past 12 games overall. The last time the Marlies faced-off against the Monsters, Lake Erie ranked last in the American Hockey League. Lake Erie holds 15-5-0-2 record when they score the game’s opening goal. Their home penalty kill ranks 28th in the AHL this season at 78.3%. Christian Hanson had his biggest game of his pro career on November 20 in Lake Erie, scoring a hat-trick and finishing with four points (three goals, one assist. Right-Winger Darren Haydar, born in Milton, Ontario leads the Monsters in scoring with 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists). He’s notched 19 power play points (nine goals, 10 assists) this season. Haydar won the AHL’s Most Valuable Player award for the 2006-07 campaign, leading the league with 122 points (41 goals, 81 assists) in 73 games. Monsters goaltender Tyler Weiman has posted a 16-12-3 record with a 2.38 goals-against average and 0.916 save percentage in 31 games. Weiman ranks 11th (tie) in the AHL in goals-against average. Lake Erie will play seven of their next eight games at Quicken Loans Arena, with their only road game coming this Sunday in Toronto.

(Jan. 30): Toronto returns from Cleveland on Saturday to face the Rochester Americans, AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers, in a 4:00 p.m. contest at Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies are yet to pick up a win against the Americans in the first three meetings (0-2-1-0). Rochester currently ranks second in the North Division with a 27-16-2-0 record for 56 points. In their most recent matchup on November 7, the Marlies dropped a 4-1 decision at Blue Cross Arena. After Todd Perry scored the game’s opening goal, the Americans scored four unanswered tallies to pick up the win. David Brine scored two goals and was named the game’s first star of the game. During the 2008-2009 season, the Americans finished in seventh place in the North Division with a record of 29-43-0-8 for 66 points. Rochester is currently the eighth best team in the AHL. Despite their strong home record (16-5-2-0), the Americans have had their struggles on the road, posting a record of 11-11-0-0. Rochester’s power play ranks seventh in the AHL with a 19.0% success rate. Last season the Marlies played eight games against the Amerks, compiling a 6-1-1-0 record, and went 2-1-1-0 against them at Ricoh Coliseum. Americans goaltender Alexander Salak was named the AHL goalie of the month for October. Salak began his AHL career with a 6-0-0 mark in seven appearances, a 1.66 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage, helping the Americans to the best record in the league during the opening month. Salak has a record of 21-6-0 with a 2.60 goals-against average and 0.918 save percentage. He currently ranks second in the AHL with 21 wins and also has appeared in two games with the Florida Panthers this season. Forward Jamie Johnson paces the Amerks in points with 46 (18 goals, 28 assists). Defenceman Clay Wilson leads the league in power play assists with 15. Toronto native, Kenndal McArdle was named the 2008-09 Connors & Ferris Comeback Player of the Year. Former Vancouver Canucks defenceman Rory Fitzpatrick is the captain of the Amerks. On Tuesday, the Florida Panthers recalled Michal Repik from the Americans for the fourth time this season.

MARLIES HEADLINES:

What Happened Last Week: The Marlies picked up five out of a possible six points this past weekend (2-0-0-1). On Friday night the Marlies ended their eight-game road trip with a 4-1 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena. The victory snapped a seven-game losing skid. Joey MacDonald was the game’s first star, turning aside 24 saves on 25 shots. Jonas Frogren’s third goal of the season held up to the game winner and Tim Brent scored his first goal as a Marlie. On Saturday evening, Toronto held on to a 4-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Marlies came back from a two-goal, third period deficit but lost to the Crunch, 4-3 in a shootout on Sunday. MacDonald started all three games, making 81 saves on 87 shots over the weekend. The Marlies currently rank seventh in the North Division with a 17-20-5-3 record for 42 points, sitting one point behind sixth placed Grand Rapids.

Home Sweet Home: The Marlies have played their best hockey on home ice this season, holding a 12-5-3-1 advantage at Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies returned home on Saturday for their first home game in 21 days when they hosted the Bulldogs. They greeted their season-high crowd of 7,084 with a 4-3 win. The Marlies have won 10 of their last 17 games and has also earned at least a point in 14 of their previous 18 contests on home ice. Toronto will play their next three of four games at home.

We’re Going Streaking: The Marlies have four players that are currently on at least a three-game point streak. Greg Scott has recorded a point in each of his past five games (two goals, three assists). His streak started with goals in back-to-back games and has recorded assists in three consecutive contests. Since joining the Marlies line-up on Friday night, Tim Brent has posted a point in each game (two goals, one assist). Kyle Calder (four assists) and Christian Hanson (one goal, five assists) have also registered points in three straight games.

New Faces: Toronto had three players make their Marlie debuts on Friday night in Grand Rapids. Tim Brent, Justin Hodgman and Ryan Stokes all skated in the Marlies 4-1 victory. Brent, who missed the first 42 games due to injury, scored in back-to-back games for the Marlies on Friday and Saturday (both coming on the power play). Hodgman scored his first career AHL goal on Saturday night against the Bulldogs. In three games so far, Stokes has recorded a plus-one rating and five penalty minutes.

Keeping It Close: The Marlies have a very impressive record this season when the game is decided by one goal, marking a record of 11-0-5-3. 11 of their 17 victories this season have come in one-goal contests. Christian Hanson and Troy Bodie share the club lead with three game-winning tallies. The Marlies own a 10-0-2-1 record when taking the lead into the third period. Toronto holds a 10-4-4 record when scoring the game’s opening goal and are 15-4-4 when they score three or more goals in a game.

Christian Keeping the Faith: Christian Hanson has posted six points (one goal, five assists) over the past three games for the Marlies. On Saturday night in Toronto’s 4-3 win, Hanson was named the game’s first star, registering the game-winning goal and two assists. He represented the PlanetUSA team at the 2010 Tim Warner AHL All-Star Classic this past week in Portland, Maine. The Glens Falls, NY native ranks first (tie) on the Marlies in points with 27 (10 goals, 17 assists). He currently ranks eighth (tie) in the American Hockey League in rookie scoring with 26 points, despite only playing in 26 games. He ranks first on the Marlies in plus/minus (plus-eight), game-winning goals (three) and multi-point games (eight). On November 20 in Lake Erie, he had the biggest night of his professional career, registering his first career AHL hat-trick and added an assist for four points.

No Stal-ing for Viktor: Since being reassigned to the Marlies on January 19, Viktor Stalberg has tallied four points (two goals, two assists) in the five games. He extended his point streak to three games on Saturday night with his two-point output against Hamilton (one goal, one assist). In 25 games this season with the Marlies, Stalberg ranks third on the team in scoring with 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists).

Foster The Statistics: Alex Foster returned to the Marlies line-up on January 8 against Peoria after missing the previous 18 games because of injury. In the three games he played on the road trip, Foster notched one assist. On November 23, the American Hockey League announced that he was named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending November 22. In three games during the week, Foster recorded six points (five goals, one assist) and a plus-two rating. In 11 games this season, the Marlies assistant captain has registered six goals and three assists.

Multi-Point Games: Christian Hanson recorded back-to-back multi-point games over the weekend. On Saturday night, Viktor Stalberg and Kyle Calder also added two-point contests in the Marlies 4-3 win over the Bulldogs.

Reading Report: The Toronto Maple Leafs ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals currently rank first in the East Division with a 22-16-1-3 record for 48 points. On Saturday night the Royals dropped a 5-3 decision to South Carolina. Defenceman Eric Werner has picked up two assists over his past two games. Werner paces all defencemen on the Royals in points with 18 (three goals, 15 assists) and plus/minus (+17). Ben Gordon represented the Royals at the ECHL All-Star Game this past week. Gordon’s tallied 20 goals and 30 assists for 50 points in 35 games this season, ranking him fourth in the ECHL and first on the Royals in points.

MARLIES QUICK HITS:

– The Marlies acquired forward Justin Hodgman from the Rockford IceHogs last Thursday in exchange for future considerations. In 33 games the Brampton, Ontario native registered nine goals and 12 assists with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL.

– The Marlies power play has scored three goals over their past three games.

– On Friday the Marlies signed defenceman Ryan Stokes to a PTO contract. The 6’4, 200-pound defenceman scored six goals and added 12 helpers in 32 games with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL.

– Brennan Evans’ 144 penalty minutes currently ranks second in the AHL for defencemen and sixth overall.

– Andre Deveaux has registered two goals over his past three games, including the game-tying goal on Sunday against Syracuse. He ranks first (tie) on the club in points with 27 (12 goals, 15 assists). Deveaux paces the club in goals and ranks third (tie) in assists.

– Toronto owns a 4-1 record in the shootout on home ice, but has lost both shootouts (0-2) on the road this season.

Reebok/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE

For the week ending January 24, 2010, the Toronto Marlies nominated forward Christian Hanson for consideration as the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week. Hanson posted six points (one goal, five assists) in three games for the Marlies, who earned five of six points over the weekend. He was named the game’s first star of the night on Saturday against Hamilton, registering the game-winning goal and two assists. The Glens Falls, NY native also represented the Marlies at the AHL All-Star Classic last week in Portland, Maine.

Recap: Joey MacDonald earned first star honours, making 24 saves, in his first game back at Van Andel Arena since he played for the Griffins. Tim Brent scored his first goal as a Marlie late in the opening period while on a Toronto power play. Toronto got goals from Jonas Frogren and Andre Deveaux in the second period to put them ahead 3-0. The Griffins made it 3-1 with 12 minutes remaining in the third period, but Viktor Stalberg’s empty net goal sealed the win for Toronto. Christian Hanson collected two assists in the game. MacDonald was named the game’s first star of the night. Tim Brent, Ryan Stokes and Justin Hodgman all made their Marlie debuts in the game.

Recap: The Marlies greeted their best crowd of the season with a thrilling 4-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday night. Justin Hodgman got the Marlies on the board five minutes into the game with his first career AHL goal. Tim Brent added to the lead with his second tally of the season on the power play. Viktor Stalberg made it 3-0 in the second period with his 10th of the season. After the Bulldogs made it 3-1, Christian Hanson registered his third point of the game, beating Curtis Sanford after receiving a pass from Kyle Calder. Hamilton made it close by adding two goals, but wasn’t enough as the Marlies won their second straight game. Joey MacDonald earned his second consecutive victory, making 25 saves. Greg Scott extended his point streak to four games with an assist on Hodgman’s first period goal.

Recap: The Marlies erased a late two-goal deficit to force extra time but the Syracuse Crunch handed Toronto their first home shootout loss of the season. Tomas Kana scored two of Syracuse’s goals, including the winner in the shootout. Stefano Giliati netted his third of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the second period. After falling behind 3-1 with five six minutes remaining in the game, Brendan Mikkelson and Andre Deveaux scored less than one minute apart to knot the game at 3-3. Greg Scott extended his point streak to five games with the assist on Deveaux’s goal. Bates Battaglia was the game’s first star, notching two assists. Joey MacDonald made his third straight start, making 32 saves in the shootout loss.
