Marlies Begin Four-Game Homestand This Afternoon versus Abbotsford Heat
Toronto Plays Four Crucial Games this Week against Conference Opponents

Opponents This Week:

(Feb. 15) The Marlies return from their four-game road trip on Monday afternoon for a 2 p.m. contest against the Abbotsford Heat, AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames. The game will be the sixth meeting, and second at Ricoh Coliseum, between the two clubs. Abbotsford holds a 3-1-0-1 advantage against the Marlies through the first five games. The Marlies and Heat met up for two games last week, with both contests being decided in the shootout. Last Tuesday, the Marlies led 3-0 but Abbotsford scored three power play goals to tie the game, and then won it in an eight-round shootout. The Heat currently ranks tied for third in the North Division with a record of 25-23-4-4 for 58 points, eight points ahead of Toronto for the final playoff spot. Abbotsford has picked up at least a point in each of their past five games (4-0-0-1). They began their nine game road trip on Friday night in Rochester with a 3-2 victory. Abbotsford ranks first in the American Hockey League in penalty minutes with 1340. The Marlies and Heat have combined for 359 penalty minutes through their first five games this season. Abbotsford has four players with over 100 penalty minutes this season (J.D. Watt, Garth Murray, Matt Pelech and Ryley Grantham). Jason Jaffray paces the Heat in goals, assists and points (18 goals, 22 assists) and also has a team-high plus-16 rating. Jaffray has been deadly on the penalty kill, scoring four shorthanded goals. Goaltender Matt Keetley, who picked up the victory over the Marlies in a relief effort, has a record of 9-7-1 with a 2.69 goals-against average and 0.909 save percentage. Keith Aulie faces his old club for the third time since being traded from Calgary to Toronto two weeks ago. The 6’5, 217-pound defenceman played in 43 games with the Heat, tallying two goals and four assists for six points.

(Feb. 17 & 20): The Marlies continue their four-game homestand on Wednesday evening against the Manitoba Moose, AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, at Ricoh Coliseum. The Moose and Marlies hook up for the second time of the week on Saturday afternoon with puck-drop at 4:00 p.m. The two teams meet for the first time at Ricoh Coliseum on Wednesday, after the first four games were played in Manitoba between the division rivals. The Moose hold the advantage with a 3-1-0-0 record against Toronto through the first four meetings. The Marlies defeated the Moose on Saturday night in Manitoba, 2-1. Justin Hodgman and Kyle Calder each had a goal and an assist; while Tim Brent finished with two helpers. The Moose have only three wins over their past 12 games. They begin their seven game road trip on Tuesday in Rochester. Manitoba currently ranks third in the North Division with a 26-23-5-1 record for 58 points through 55 games. The Marlies met the Moose in the first round of the 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs, where they fell to the Moose in six games. Toronto led the series 2-1 but then lost three straight. The Marlies hold an all-time regular season record of 13-19-2-2 against the Moose. Forward Marco Rosa paces the Moose in scoring this season with 36 points (16 goals, 20 assists) and also has a team-high (tie) four power play markers. Right-Winger Sergei Shirokov ranks second in points with 34 (16 goals, 18 assists). Shirokov was selected in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Canucks. He played the 2008-09 season in the KHL for CSKA Moscow where he totaled 41 points (17 goals, 24 assists) in 56 games. Goaltender Cory Schneider has posted a record of 22-16-1 with a 2.65 goals-against average and 0.912 save percentage. Schneider ranks tied for fourth in wins and third in minutes played (2309) in the AHL.

(Feb. 19): The Marlies host the Texas Stars, AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars, for the first and only time this season on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The game will be the second of two meetings this season between the two teams. Texas dropped the Marlies on January 15 in Austin, TX by a score of 5-1. Warren Peters was the game’s first star, scoring a goal and recorded a plus-two rating. Richard Greenop scored his first career AHL goal in the loss. The Stars currently rank fourth in the West Division with a record of 29-18-3-4 for 65 points. They’ve had their struggles lately though, losing their past three games. Texas posts a 13-8-2-2 record away from the Cedar Park Center this season and are currently on a five-game road trip. The Stars are the second least penalized team in the league with 709 penalty minutes; compared to the Marlies who rank second with 1273 total minutes. When the Stars score the game’s first goal, they hold a record of 22-4-1-1. They’ve only scored seven goals on 27 attempts in the shootout (0.250) which ranks 24th in the league. Forward Travis Morin paces the club in points with 35 (14 goals, 21 assists). Forward Perttu Lindgren, who ranks first on the team in plus/minus (+12) was selected by Dallas in the third round, 75th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut on October 19 against the Los Angeles Kings. Greg Rallo ranks first on Texas in goals with 16. Six of his 16 markers have come on the man advantage. In 32 games this season, goaltender Matt Climie has compiled a record of 14-14-3 with a 2.44 goals-against average and 0.921 save percentage with three shutouts.

MARLIES HEADLINES:

What Happened Last Week: The Marlies picked up five points in their four games last week (2-1-0-1), playing Manitoba and Abbotsford each twice. They opened their week on Monday with a 3-2 shootout win over Abbotsford. Alex Berry and Justin Hodgman scored for Toronto and Josh Engel netted the shootout winner. The following night against the Heat, the Marlies saw their 3-0 lead evaporate when Abbotsford connected three times while on the man-advantage and dropped a 4-3 decision in the shootout. On Friday night the Moose got two goal games from Michael Grabner and Marco Rosa to lead them to a 5-1 win over Toronto. The following night, the Marlies edged the Moose 2-1 led by solid goaltending from James Reimer and two-point games from Tim Brent, Justin Hodgman and Kyle Calder. The Marlies are currently tied for sixth place in the North Division with a 20-25-5-5 record for 50 points and sit eight points out of a playoff spot.

Home Sweet Home: The Marlies have played their best hockey on home ice this season, holding a 13-7-3-2 advantage at Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies have earned a point in six of their past eight home contests. They greeted their season-high crowd of 7,084 with a 4-3 win over Hamilton on January 23 after their season-high, eight-game road trip. The Marlies have earned at least a point in 16 of their past 22 contests on home ice. Toronto returns to Ricoh Coliseum today for a 2 p.m. tilt against the Heat and will play their next four games on home ice.

Another Brick in the Wall: James Reimer returned to action on Saturday night against the Moose after suffering an injury that kept him out of the line-up since November 27. Reimer was the game’s first star, making 33 saves on Saturday in the Marlies 2-1 win over Manitoba. He has guided the Marlies to at least a point in each of his past eight starts (6-0-1), and has won four straight decisions. Over his past seven starts, he’s recorded a 0.943 save percentage and 1.80 goals-against average. In 10 games this season, Reimer has a record of 7-1-1 with a 2.15 goals-against average and 0.930 save percentage.

Putting Up Points: Since joining the Marlies line-up on January 22 in Grand Rapids, Tim Brent has posted a point in seven of his nine games (four goals, six assists). On Saturday night in Winnipeg, Brent assisted on both Marlie goals in their 2-1 victory over the Moose. Brent’s two assist output was his third multi-point game of the season. Greg Scott has registered a point in nine of his past 14 games, recording six goals and five assists during that span. Last Tuesday versus Abbotsford, Scott notched his eighth goal of the season and was named the game’s second star. Kyle Calder has tallied a point in eight of his past 11 contests (three goals, seven assists).

No Stal-ing for Viktor: Viktor Stalberg was re-assigned to the Marlies on Saturday after playing in two games with the Maple Leafs. He skated in the Marlies 2-1 victory over the Moose on Saturday evening in Winnipeg. Stalberg has tallied eight points (three goals, five assists) over his past 11 games with the Marlies and ranks second (tie) on the club in points. In 32 games this season, he’s posted 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists) and a team-high, plus-eight rating. Stalberg ranks 12th in the American Hockey League in rookie points.

New Kid On The Block: Since being traded to the Marlies on January 20 from Rockford, Justin Hodgman has been racking up the points. On Saturday night he registered his second multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist, earning third star honours. In 13 games with Toronto, Hodgman has recorded eight points (four goals, four assists) and eight penalty minutes. Last Monday night in Abbotsford, he scored his first power play goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2, and also was successful in the shootout in the team’s 3-2 win.

Keeping It Close: The Marlies have a very impressive record this season when the game is decided by one goal, marking a record of 13-1-5-5. 13 of their 20 victories this season have come in one-goal contests. Christian Hanson and Troy Bodie share the club lead with three game-winning tallies. The Marlies own a 12-0-2-2 record when taking the lead into the third period. Toronto holds a 13-6-5 record when scoring the game’s opening goal and are 17-6-6 when they score three or more goals in a game.

Christian Keeping the Faith: Christian Hanson was re-assigned from the Maple Leafs on Saturday and has posted eight points (three goals, five assists) over the past eight games with the Marlies. Hanson played in four games during his recall with the Leafs, recording four penalty minutes and 11 shots. He represented the PlanetUSA team at the 2010 Tim Warner AHL All-Star Classic on January 19 in Portland, Maine. The Glens Falls, NY native ranks second on the Marlies in points with 29 (12 goals, 17 assists). He currently ranks 12th (tie) in the American Hockey League in rookie scoring with 29 points, despite only playing in 31 games.

Devo Time: Andre Deveaux has registered points in four of his past five games for the Marlies (two goals, three assists). He made his season debut with the Maple Leafs last Monday. Last Tuesday when he returned to the Marlies line-up, he notched his fifth multi-point game of the season with two assists in the team’s 4-3 shootout loss in Abbotsford. He ranks first on the club in points with 32 (14 goals, 18 assists) and second with 155 penalty minutes. Deveaux paces the club in goals and is tied for first in assists.

Multi-Point Games: The Marlies had five players notch multi-point games last week. On Tuesday in Abbotsford, Andre Deveaux (two assists) and Ashton Rome (one goal, one assist) each tallied two-point games. For Rome it was his first multi-point contest of the season. Tim Brent, Kyle Calder and Justin Hodgman each collected two-point nights on Saturday against the Moose. Christian Hanson and Viktor Stalberg pace the club with eight multi-point games this season.

Reading Report: The Toronto Maple Leafs ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals currently rank second in the East Division with a 25-21-1-3 record for 54 points. The Royals have won their past two games, including a 5-3 win over Wheeling on Sunday evening. Robert Slaney and Andrew Engelage were re-assigned to the Royals on Friday. Slaney notched three assists on Saturday night in the team’s 6-5 win over Trenton. Ben Gordon represented the Royals at the ECHL All-Star Game in mid-January. Gordon’s tallied 21 goals and 34 assists for 55 points in 43 games this season, ranking him seventh in the ECHL and first on the Royals in points.

MARLIES QUICK HITS:

– The Marlies re-assigned goaltender Andrew Engelage and forward Robert Slaney to the Reading Royals on Friday afternoon.

– Kyle Calder is currently on a three-game point streak (two goals, two assists).

Reebok/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE

For the week ending February 14, 2010, the Toronto Marlies nominated forward Justin Hodgman for consideration as the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week. Hodgman began the week with a goal on Monday night against the Heat in the club’s 3-2 shootout win. He also scored his first shootout goal of the season and was named the game’s second star. On Saturday night against Manitoba, the Brampton, ON native scored a goal and added an assist for his second multi-point game of the season. In four games last week he registered two goals and an assist.

Recap: The Marlies began their four-game road trip with a 3-2 comeback, shootout win on Monday night against the Heat. Alex Berry banged home his second of the season when he found the loose puck in front of the Heat net in the first period. Josh Engel and Richard Greenop picked up assists on the goal. The Heat got goals from Jason Jaffray and Colin Stuart in the second period to put them ahead 2-1, but Justin Hodgman knotted the game with his third of the season on a Marlies power play. After a scoreless third period and overtime, Engel notched the shootout-winner and Joey MacDonald stood tall making four saves in the shootout to lead the Marlies to a 3-2 win.

Recap: The Marlies jumped out a 3-0 lead, but allowed three power play goals to the Heat, which used a shootout to down Toronto, 4-3. Kyle Calder, Ashton Rome and Greg Scott scored the game’s first three goals. Andre Deveaux collected assists on Calder’s and Scott’s tallies for a two-point night. Abbotsford scored three power play goals to tie the game at 3-3. The Heat out-shot Toronto 4-0 in overtime, but couldn’t beat Marlies starting goalie Joey MacDonald, who finished the game with 34 saves. In the shootout, David Van der Gulik beat MacDonald in the eighth round for the win.

Friday, February 12 at Manitoba Moose

Recap: The Marlies lost their third game of the season to their division rivals, the Manitoba Moose on Friday night, 5-1. Marco Rosa and Michael Grabner each scored twice for the Moose in the win. Marlies starting goalie, Joey MacDonald made 14 saves in the first period, but Manitoba scored three, second period goals to put them ahead 4-0. Alex Berry scored his third goal of the season when Kyle Calder set him up in front of the Moose goal. Phil Oreskovic notched his third assist of the season on the goal. MacDonald finished the game with 28 saves. The Marlies power play went 0-for-10.

Recap: James Reimer made 33 saves to help guide the Marlies to a 2-1 win on Saturday night in Winnipeg. Justin Hodgman put the Marlies ahead 1-0 mid-way through the second period. Tim Brent and Kyle Calder each collected assists on Hodgman’s fourth of the season. The Moose tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Michael Grabner early in the third period. At the 11:13 mark of the final frame, Calder tipped a Brent shot that put Toronto in front 2-1. Despite the Moose out-shooting the Marlies 12-6 in the third period, Toronto held onto the victory. Hodgman, Calder and Brent each finished the game with two points. Reimer made his first start since suffering an injury on November 27 and picked up his fourth consecutive win.
