One of the best teams in the Western Conference faces one of the hottest on Thursday night as the Nashville Predators host the Dallas Stars at Bridgestone Arena in the ‘Music City’.  Nashville has responded bigtime to the coaching of Peter Laviolette and has made the jump from a ‘decent team’ to one of the top clubs in the entire NHL.  Dallas got off to a slow start this season but has come roaring to life in the past month winning 8 of their last 11.

Early reports from this site suggest that Preds are the betting favorites over Stars for this game. The Predators are among the league’s elite but the public has yet to bet them accordingly.  Were Dallas playing at Anaheim the Ducks would be -190 or -200.  The St. Louis Blues were a -175 home favorite against the Stars in late December.

The Dallas Stars have been winning games the ‘old fashioned way’—by scoring a lot of goals and pushing tempo on their opponents.  In many ways they’re a ‘poor man’s’ Tampa Bay Lightning.  They have a powerhouse offense that ranks #4 in the league in goals per game (3.05).  They have a competent workhorse goaltender in Kari Lehtonen that keeps them in games.  The problem is that while Tampa Bay’s scoring defense is ‘middle of the pack’ the Stars is downright bad.  Dallas ranks #27 in scoring defense allowing 3.26 goals per game.  Only Edmonton, Buffalo and Arizona are worse defensively.

It’s unlikely that the Stars’ high scoring strategy will work against the Nashville Predators.  The Preds have been at the top of the team defense rankings all season long and are currently the #2 goals against per game team in the NHL (2.23 goals against per game) right behind the Chicago Blackhawks.  They’ve got arguably the best goalie in the league in Pekka Rinne who is having a career season.  But the Preds have always played solid defense—the difference this year is that they’re a formidable offense as well.  Hard to believe, but Nashville has the #8 scoring offense in the NHL and a host of playmakers led by rookie of the year frontrunner Filip Forsberg.

As good as Nashville is, they’re still not getting the respect from the marketplace that they deserve.  There are only two NHL teams with fewer than 10 regulation losses—Nashville is one of them along with the best record in the league Anaheim Ducks.  The Preds have the best home record in the league and have lost only 3 games at the Bridgestone Arena all season with only two coming in regulation.  No other team has fewer than four regulation losses at home.

Dallas’ recent success hasn’t come against the Central Division—they’re 2-11 against divisional rivals this year while Nashville is 10-5.
