The hosts Sri Lanka are all set to take on Zimbabwe in their group matches in Group C, in the 2012 World T20 curtain raiser, to be played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota today, September 18.
Sri Lanka is aiming to have a winning start in their ICC World Twenty20 2012 campaign on Tuesday. Mahela Jayawardene’s men will take the field with high hopes that they can end a 16-year wait for their second global title in front of their local fans. Jayawardene had earlier caustioned that Zimbabwe, who upset Australia at the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007, needed to be taken seriously in Tuesday’s opening match at Hambantota.
Jayawardene has said: “They are a good team and can be attacking and very competitive. We need to be at our best and not get complacent.”
The Sri Lankan probable squad to play include: Mahela Jayawardena (captain), Dinesh Chandimal, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Akila Dananjaya, Shaminda Eranga, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis, Jeewan Mendis, Dilshan Munaweera, Thisara Perera, Kumar Sangakkara, Lahiru Thirimanna.
Zimbabwe have lost their last 12 official T20 internationals, plus the two warm-up matches against Ireland and Bangladesh. But current skipper, Brendan Taylor was the star winner in the 2007 victory against Australia when he hit an unbeaten fifty. The Zimbabwe team likely to play include: Brendan Taylor (captain), Stuart Matsikenyeri, Vusi Sibanda, Ray Price, Hamilton Masakadza, Craig Ervine, Malcolm Waller, Brian Vitori, Elton Chigumbura, Graeme Cremer, Kyle Jarvis, Chris Mpofu, Richard Muzhange, Prosper Utseya, Forster Mutizwa.
