ICC World T20 finally gears up for its first big knock-out encounter in the shape of Ireland v West Indies, with both sides in need of a victory to advance to the Super Eight. The match will take place at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, today, September 24, 2012.
Although the West Indies start as clear favourites, with their smashing player Chris Gayle in dream form, the William Porterfield-led Irish side has a penchant for springing a few surprises at the big stage. West Indies would not take Ireland lightly as it would prove hazardous for them. The Darren Sammy-led West Indies, despite losing to Australia by 17 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in their opening match, showed that it has got the team to go the distance. The probable West Indian squad may include: Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith, Johnson Charles, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy (c), Denesh Ramdin(wk), Sunil Narine, Ravi Rampaul, Fidel Edwards.
On the other hand, Ireland team is a pack of surprise. History had witnessed what they did to England in last 50 over World Cup and how they defeated Pakistan in 2007. Ireland fans will be hopeful that today they repeat the surprise and beat West Indies and qualify for super eights. In their first match against Australia they did not played well and while playing first they had given the target for only 123 runs which Aussies chased easily. The Ireland’s likely line up may include: William Porterfield (c), Paul Stirling, Ed Joyce, Niall O’Brien, Gary Wilson (wk), Kevin O’Brien, Trent Johnston, George Dockrell, Nigel Jones, Boyd Rankin, Alex Cusack.
