The Danish player and the former world number 6, Joachim Persson opened his 2012 Czech International campaign on the second day of the tournament somewhat in the shadow of the local favourite Petr Koukal but he defeated his opponent. Despite the knee injury that has hampered him for the past seven years, he remain able to collect his first win by beating fellow Dane Kasper Dinesen in two easy sets. He then played his second match of the day against dangerous Dutch qualifier Nick Fransman and took the match with 21-13 and 21-19 win.

Second qualifying seed Josh Green won all three of his qualifying matches in straight games, beating team-mate Sam Phillips in his qualifying decider 21-15 21-12. The sixth seed Jamie Bonsels also won his three matches in straight games but two of them were close. He beat Denmark’s Philip Pawlowski 21-19 21-19 then edged out Czech Adam Mendrek 21-18 21-17. In the first round he will face Rosario Maddaloni of Italy. Michael Spencer-Smith lost in the final draw with 21-9 21-11 to third seed Kim Brun of Denmark.

In the women’s singles draw, top seed Kristina Gavnholt easily advanced to the quarter finals where she will play against the surprise English player of the tournament so far, Sarah Milne. Milne beat fifth seed Sabrina Jaquet in the first round before defeating Danish based compatriot Nicola Cerfontyne in the second round to book her quarter final spot. Fourth seed and recent Yonex Belgian International Champion, Sashina Vignes Waran looks energetic to win consecutive tournaments after a demolition of both her opponents in the opening rounds. The third qualifying seed Georgina Bland just failed to make it into the main draw. She won her opening contest easily enough but lost her final qualifier 15-21 21-12 21-14 against Denmark’s Julie Davidsen.

It proved to be a lucky day for the English team in their traditional strong discipline of mixed doubles as Peter Mills and Alysssa Lim reached the main draw after a 21-6 20-22 21-11 win over Kek Jamnik and Maja Tvrdy of Slovenia.

English pairs will make up half the field in the quarter finals and it looks like a repeat of the final of Belgium just two weeks ago between Olver/Langridge and Ellis/White is on the cards.
