South Africa dominated the opening day of the 2nd test match as they closed at 325 for 4 at stumps on at St. George’s Park on Friday with the contribution of a century (106) made by Hashim Amla.

Amla saved the day for his team after Graeme Smith (54) and Jacques Kallis were dismissed quickly one after the other and AB de Villiers failed to complete his half-century. Amla made partnerships of 92 with Smith, 86 with De Villiers and 102 unbroken with Faf du Plessis (69 not out) to anchor South Africa, which won the first test by an innings and looked on course for another strong showing in the second.

Doug Bracewell led the bowlers with 2 for 70 but New Zealand bowlers remained unable to restrict Amla after Alviro Petersen fell to Bracewell after a tricky opening spell from the New Zealand quicks. But Amla, South Africa’s outstanding batsman of 2012, completed his 19th Test century and fifth in his last eight Tests.

Earlier, Smith’s stand with Amla put South Africa in control at 121 for 1, but Kiwis made some surprises in the day as Smith gloved behind to wicketkeeper BJ Watling off Neil Wagner. Kallis played nicely before edging to Watling off Bracewell for 8 at 137 for 3. Amla and De Villiers and then Amla and Du Plessis changed the scene afterwards. New Zealand managed just one more wicket – that of De Villiers – for almost the entire last two sessions.

De Villiers passed 6,000 Test runs but was too aggressive straight after registering his 31st Test 50 and was caught on the edge of the in-field by Williamson off the persistent Patel.

Du Plessis and Amla made the scoreboard going as Du Plessis made his half-century. Bracewell managed to grab two wickets, while Trent Boult was disappointing for his 0 for 74 and Wagner had 1 for 88. At the end of the day, Patel finished with 1 for 60.
