The Omega Dubai Desert Classic 2013 will open on Thursday at Emirates Golf Club (Majlis course), Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is a PGA European Tour sanctioned event featuring a $2.5 million prize. It is held annually in January or February at the same venue, and it is promoted and organised by the umbrella organisation Golf in Dubai.
The event includes some of the biggest names in golf. Tiger Woods has appeared for six times in the event since 2001 and has remained successful twice. However, the most successful golfer at this event has been Ernie Els who attended the tournament in 12 different years and grabbed the victory for thrice. The youngest player in the event to win the trophy was Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy who was just 19 years old when he won in 2009.
The defending champion of 2012 is Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello – the fifth Spanish player to win the Omega Dubai Desert Classic event. This year, he will be attempting to become the first player ever to win back-to-back title.
Another Spanish golfer, Sergio Garcia, who had narrowly missed 11th European Tour title Qatar last week against the eventual winner Chris Wood – who won remarkably at the last to gain the victory, both of them and South Africa’s George Coetzee will play the event.
England’s Lee Westwood will be making his 2013 debut there as well and determined to win his first Major within the current year and is hopeful his recent move to the U.S. will be a big factor.
