On the opening day of the 1st test match, Marlon Samuels successfully achieved a career-best haul of 4 for 13 and fellow off-spinner Shane Shillingford took 3 for 58 as the West Indies bowled out Zimbabwe for 211 on Tuesday. However, the tourists did not lose it all as latterly their fast bowler Kyle Jarvis (2 for 9), made the hosts to slip at 18-2 at stumps.

After winning the toss, Zimbabwe side decided to start with the batting first. Their opener Tino Mawoyo made the top score of 50 but pacer Kemar Roach (2 for 31) and Shillingford smashed the top batting order before Samuels wrapped up the rival’s innings. Earlier, Zimbabwe lost Vusi Sibanda (12) off Roach.

Mawoyo and Hamilton Masakadza made a second wicket partnership of 42 before Masakadza on 17 was caught superbly by Samuels off Roach. The 27-year-old Mawoyo, was playing well before he pushed a bat-pad catch to short leg off Shillingford. Afterwards, fast pacer Shannon Gabriel made the skipper Brendan Taylor (26) out with an outswinging yorker to pluck out the off stump and made Zimbabweans to slip at 110 for 4.

Shillingford then added a wicket of Malcolm Waller as lbw. Left-hander Craig Ervine batted enterprisingly for 29 before Samuels bowled him and made the visitors to fall at 162 for 6.

Cremer (25) was also in brilliant form before he slashed to backward point off Samuels. Regis Chakabva was then caught by Kieran Powell at short leg for 15 off Shillingford. Samuels quickly wrapped up the innings with Jarvis (0) caught by Powell at bat-pad and Tendai Chatara (2) caught at mid-off. Ray Price remained unbeaten at 12.

Jarvis then returned to bowl and made Left-hander Powell out as lbw. Jarvis strike again as the nightwatchman Kemar Roach followed the opener to get lbw. Chris Gayle remained unbeaten at 11 at the close with Darren Bravo yet to score.
