On Day 2 of the U.S. Open 2013, numerous popular players performed in the opening round and provided the spectators with amazing action.
The women’s field has officially been pared in half, with an overwhelming majority of the world’s top players advancing. Victoria Azarenka, Sara Errani and Caroline Wozniacki were all given their opportunities to join Serena Williams, Agnieszka Radwanska with others for a chance to move forward.
No. 2 seed Victoria Azarenka started her campaign with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany.
In one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, 17-year-old American and world No. 296 Victoria Duval upset 2011 champion and 11th seeded Samantha Stosur with 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Earlier on Tuesday, No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic and the 2011 Wimbledon champion, earned a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory against Misaki Doi of Japan.
In men’s side, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic played smoothly his first-round match, rolling over Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania with 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in mere 82 minutes as he is seeking his second title and fourth straight final at Flushing Meadows.
Roger Federer participated in his record-tying 56th consecutive Grand Slam and earned a routine first-round win, cruising past Grega Zemlja of Slovakia with 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in a match that postponed on Monday.
