In the opening round of the Yonex French Open 2013, defending Men’s Singles champion Daren Liew surrendered his title on Wednesday against expert player Boonsak Ponsana (Thailand, 6) with 15-21, 21-15 and 21-19.
While, Liew’s senior compatriot Lee Chong Wei (1), ensured his entry into the second-round with a 22-20, 21-12 result over Kashyap Parupalli (India).
Thailand’s Maneepong Jongjit made a winning return to the international circuit after serving a three-month ban for an altercation with former Men’s Doubles team-mate Bodin Issara during the Canada Open. In Mixed Doubles draw, Jongjit and Sapsiree Taerattanachai advanced to the main round after winning a couple of qualifiers. The Thai pair beat Ronan Labar/Emilie Lefel (France) with 21-10, 21-19 in their opening match before defeating of German pair, Johannes Schoettler and Johanna Goliszewski with 21-9, 21-11.
Two doubles champions at the Denmark Open clashed in qualifying. Lee Yong Dae partnered Shin Seung Chan in Mixed Doubles and ran into Liu Cheng/Bao Yixin (China) in the opening qualifying round and advanced comfortably with 21-10, 21-16 before beating Max Schwenger/Carla Nelte (Germany) to get an entry into the main draw.
Russians Ella Diehl and Ksenia Polikarpova qualified to the main draw of Women’s Singles along with Chen Jiayuan (Singapore) and Sabrina Jaquet (Switzerland). Diehl overcame Line Kjaersfeldt (Denmark) 21-18, 21-16, while Polikarpova was an easy 21-7, 21-8 victory over Tai Ching Chieh (Chinese Taipei) in the second round of qualifying.
French pair Lucas Corvee and Brice Leverdez won a thrilling Men’s Doubles second-round qualifier over compatriots Bastian Kersaudy/Gaetan Mittelheisser with 19-21, 21-15 and 21-19.
