On Day 4 of the opening test match, England’s Joe Root and James Anderson set a new record for the most runs made by a tenth-wicket partnership in Test cricket bysharing a 198-run stand against India at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

The duo surpassed the previous tenth-wicket Test record of 163 – shared by Australia’s Phil Hughes and Ashton Agar against England, also at Trent Bridge, last year – when Root clipped left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja for a leg-side single.

It was the second impressive tenth-wicket stand of the match after Bhuvneshwar Kumar (58) and Mohammed Shami (51 not out) had put on 111 for India in a first innings total 457.

The hosts performed unconvincingly as they fell to 298 for nine on Friday in the chase of India’s 1st innings 457, but afterwards, the pair helped their team to not only surpass the visitor’s score but also took a lead of 39 runs and made 496.

India in their second innings made 167 for 3 at the close of the day.
