The Canadian Men’s National Water Polo Team is peaking at just the right time, according to Head Coach, Dragan Jovanovic (Calgary, AB).

The 13-man squad is entering its final stages of preparation for the Olympic Qualification Tournament, April 1 – 8 in Edmonton. The top four teams will earn the right to compete at the Olympic Games in London in July.

Speaking to reporters following a training session in Calgary on Wednesday, Jovanovic praised the work ethic and the commitment of his players.

“This group of athletes has been training extremely hard for months and we’ve had some very good international results over that period,” said Jovanovic, who has led the Men’s National Team Program since 2004.

“There’s no question in my mind that we’re fit and strong enough to compete with any of the other teams in the Tournament. If we play to our potential, then we’ve got an excellent chance to qualify for this summer’s Olympics.”

The groupings for the Olympic Qualification Tournament are:

Group A                                            Group B

Montenegro                                      Canada

Germany                                           Venezuela

Greece                                              Turkey

Macedonia                                       Spain

Romania                                           Brazil

Netherlands                                     Argentina

The top 4 teams in each group will advance to the quarter-final round on Friday, April 6. The winners of those matches will qualify for London 2012.

“It’s a test of endurance, for sure, since we’ll be playing top level teams every day for at least five days in a row, and hopefully longer if we can make it out of the group stage,” added Team Canada Captain, Aaron Feltham (Lindsay, ON). “But, having qualified for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, we know what it takes to compete at that level and to be successful.”
