Now that we’re heading towards the summer (though in Toronto, for example, that may be a difficult idea to take on board right now), the minds of Canadian golf fans will be turning towards the US Open, scheduled to start on June 12th this year.

Canadian Interest

While Woods, McIlroy or Mickelson will be favourites with many people to pick up the winner’s share of the prize money – over US$1.4m – there’ll be plenty of Canadian interest as well. You can keep up with the latest odds and news by clicking on the link above. Here we’ll look at the records of three of the Canadian golfers we’re likely to see in the US Open.

David Hearn

David Hearn, 34, from Brampton, Ontario, has been a pro golfer since 2001, and within 12 months was named Canada’s Tour Rookie Of the Year. He nearly made the cut for the 2008 US Open, but finally succeeded last year. His joint-21st place finish will be something he’ll be looking to improve on at Pinehurst in June.

Hearn is Canada’s second highest ranked player, behind Graham DeLaet. He’s had a couple of good performances this year already, finishing joint-8th at the Valspar Championship and 6th at the Honda Classic. Last year saw Hearn finishing joint-2nd at the John Deere Classic, just missing out on top spot due to some nervous tie-break putting. He also represented Canada last year at the World Cup Of Golf. Since 2009, his world ranking* has improved from 757th to 106th.

Adam Hadwin

26-year-old Adam Hadwin from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, has five years of pro golf under his belt already. 2014 has been good to him so far, with a one-stroke victory at the Chile Classic in early March. He was joint 39th in the 2011 US Open, but didn’t play the next year. Hadwin made the cut in 2013 and is definitely one to watch in June. He finished in the top 10 in six different Canadian Tour events in 2010, and had a superb 2011 season. While 2012 was a little slower, he seems to be back on form and likely to add to his total of 10 pro wins. Hadwin’s current world ranking is 350.

Mackenzie Hughes

Our final Canadian player who’s likely to play in the US Open is Mackenzie Hughes, 23, a native of Dundas, Ontario. Hughes had a superb amateur career, winning the Canadian Amateur Championship in 2011 and 2012. Having qualified for last year’s US Open, he registered a PGA Tour Canada win at the Cape Breton Celtic Classic. Hughes’ current world ranking is 579, and Canadian fans can expect to see him climbing the table as his experience grows.
