The Toronto Arrows Rugby Club is pleased to announce that Lucas Rumball has been appointed as club captain for the 2019 Major League Rugby season.

The 23-year-old native of Scarborough, Ont., will serve as the club’s first captain as an MLR team.

“Lucas is a player who leads by example,” said Arrows Director of Rugby Chris Silverthorn. “He’s the type of player who gives his all, whether it’s on the pitch or at the training ground. He sets a professional tone day-in and day-out, and has earned the respect of his teammates with his dedicated approach to the game and the intangibles he adds to the culture of the club.”

“We have a strong core of leaders in the squad, and Lucas has been a key part of that group since arriving here,” added Silverthorn. “He will be continuing to lead the group to help drive this team forward in our inaugural season.”

The product of the Toronto-based Balmy Beach Rugby Club has been no stranger to leadership roles throughout his young rugby career.

Rumball has already earned 23 caps for Canada, and captained the national side in a test match against Russia this past summer.

The versatile forward has also served as a captain with Canada’s Under-20 side at the World Rugby Under-20 Trophy in 2015, during his time as a student-athlete at Queen’s University, as well as with his grassroots club.

“I was honoured when the coaching staff asked me to take on the role this season, and I’m excited to have earned this responsibility,” said Rumball. “In this team, we are fortunate to have a solid number of players that have strong experience, and we all work well together to push each other forward.”

“To captain my hometown team makes this responsibility even more special,” added Rumball. “I can’t wait to lead the team out. We’ve all been working hard to prepare for our first season in Major League Rugby, and we recognize and appreciate the opportunity that’s in front of us. We can’t wait to get going, and to represent our city, province, and nation when we step on the pitch.”
