Two-goal performance helps push Eddies into league contention

FC Edmonton forward Michael Cox scored two goals, including a spectacular overhead kick, in his side’s 3-0 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks and is recognized with North American Soccer League Player of the Week honours.

Cox chased down a loose ball late in the first half and pressured visiting keeper Joe Nasco to handle the ball outside the penalty area and the resulting free kick led to the opening goal. On the stroke of halftime, Cox pounced on a defensive error to slot home FC Edmonton’s second goal of the game and earn a 2-0 halftime lead.

Twenty-year-old Cox saved the spectacular for the second half, looping in an overhead kick for his second and Edmonton’s third goal just five minutes into the second half.

“The ball came, I chested it up and it was in a good position,” Cox said of his second goal.  “The first thing that came to my mind was bicycle and I just did it and it went in.

“To get Player of the Week from the league is an honour of course, but the important thing is we got all three points and are keeping pace with the league leaders.”

FC Edmonton Coach Colin Miller added: “I would say that Coxi did well for both goals and his second in particular shows for a big lad he has good agility. He worked hard and caused Atlanta problems all game with his pace.”

Cox has played his entire professional career with the Eddies having joined from high school in Calgary and he scored the first goal in team history back in 2010 when he hit the target twice in an exhibition game against Montreal Impact.

Edmonton’s 3-0 win over Atlanta maintained a one hundred percent home record this season and pushed them up to fourth place in the standings level on points with second placed Tampa Bay and third placed Minnesota.
